Re: A request to explain Vajrayana to a common Mahayanika

What's the deal with deity yoga? I found Lama Thubten Yeshe's explanations in his books very helpful for developing an understanding of this. 'Becoming the Compassion Buddha' would be one. Lord of Love by Bokar Rinpoche is another good one. Gyatrul Rinpoche's Generating the Diety for a third.

Re: Gangteng Tulku Rinpoche

I don't know of any controversies around Gangteng Tulku. I along with a few of my teachers have received teachings and empowerments from Ganteng Tulku. I haven't been around him too much, but I was impressed with what I saw. Also Rinpoche has a three-year retreat program for Westerners somewhere in ...

Re: I believe the lower realms can be emptied in a day

'(To say that) “the Buddha appears in the world and saves sentient beings” are words of the nine-part teachings; they are words of the incomplete teaching. Anger and joy, sickness and medicine, are all oneself; there is no one else. Where is there a Buddha appearing in the world? Where are there se...

where is the screen shot from? It is the Padma Karpo Translation Committee's Online Dictionary, the Illuminator Tibetan-English Encyclopaedic Dictionary . It is a very valuable resource to me, I think it is well worth the expense. There are native desktop app versions as well, but I prefer the web ...

Re: Longchenpa OEE?

There is a discussion of this in the introduction to the Padmakara Translation Group's new translation of "Finding Rest in the Nature of the Mind. They quote from Longchenpa's "An Ocean of Elegant Explanations" (Legs bshad rgya mtsho). Thank you! Oddly enough, I just finished reading that book a co...

If the buddhas and bodhisattvas could do that, wouldn't they have already done that? Surely that has been their aspiration for quite some time now.

Re: The Self-Arisen Vidya Tantra and The Self-Liberated Vidya Tantra A Translation of the Rigpa Rang Shar and Rigpa Rang

Noob question: Where can I learn more about this Buddha "Powerful Heroic Youth" (Gzhon nu Dpa' bo stobs ldan) - which I'm guessing is Shyönnu Pawo Tobden, sixth of the 12 founding Dzogchen masters? Are there any literatures that explain more about this Buddha and his nirmanakaya field? I'm still ma...

Re: Is it rare to spend time with your guru?

It is not rare with many teachers, some of which Pema Chopel listed. One of those teachers is my own whom I would say I had a somewhat close relationship with for about 7 years before moving out of state recently. And I've heard even with some higher profile lamas, it's possible to get closer to the...

Re: Does poti wang accomplish the same as lung?

To be more specific, some time ago I received some Düdjom Tersar empowerments, but either I didn’t know enough back then to recognize the lung being given as well, or maybe it wasn’t? Years later I received the Düdjom Tersar poti wang, so I’m wondering if this is equivalent functionally to receivin...

In my younger and naively idealistic days, I deeply sympathized with the approach of Earth First! I don't agree with their fundamental philosophical position anymore - more or less the misanthropic view that humanity is a cancer. I did and continue to admire some of their direct actions - tree sitt...

Re: Help on shamatha

Maybe I need to go back and listen again. I seem to remember the gist of it being that stable shamata is important for further practice (I believe this is true) and that often people tend to skip shamata in order to jump straight to more "exciting" and "higher" practices (I also believe this is tru...

Re: Help on shamatha

Wisdom Posdcast has 2 episodes with Alan Wallace where he spends a great deal of time discussing shamatha. I think you may find them helpful. PS. There is also one with some guy named Malcolm... Alan Wallace's view on shamatha and its relationship with the rest of practice is kind of insane, IMO. M...
