Re: Is dependant origination eternal?
Some sutras more savior-oriented others more mystical. Guess it depends. Which sutras would you describe as savior-oriented? Which ones are more mystical, in your view? The Lotus Sutra is more savior-oriented. The dharmapada is more mystical Tibetan texts are mystical. A lot of the sutras are more ...

Re: Is dependant origination eternal?
If you are certain that your view is NOT equivalent to the wrong views stated, then no problem. The Buddha's view isn't wrong view. I don't think in rights and wrongs. Makes me personally judgemental; so, I don't see where I'm wrong with the sutras... Only that you disagree how I expressed the same...

Re: Is dependant origination eternal?
This is a wrong view. “What are these three (wrong) views? They are (1) the view of cessation, which means the ultimate end; (2)the view of extinction, which is equated to nirvāṇa; (3) the view that nirvāṇa is a void, which means that nirvāṇa is the ultimate quiet nothingness. Śāriputra, in this wa...

I think its really uncomfortable to hear "lights out." I think thats what The Buddha was addressing. .. This is a wrong view. “What are these three (wrong) views? They are (1) the view of cessation, which means the ultimate end; (2)the view of extinction, which is equated to nirvāṇa; (3) ...

Re: Is dependant origination eternal?
Ive read The Lotus Sutra when I had practice Nichiren Buddhism. I want to get the Diamond and Heart in hand but havent got around to it. Im reading In The Buddha's Words. I think The Lotus mentions that The Buddha "comes back" when The Dharma is spoken. Kind of like the Ceremony in the Air...

Re: Is dependant origination eternal?
Thanks to everyone for all the helpful insights. Buddhism rejects eternalism regarding all compound things, but what about the flow of karma, cause and effect ever moving myriad things? Even after kalpas upon kalpas it would seem that it's posited that the process of being and non-being will contin...

Even after kalpas upon kalpas it would seem that it's posited that the process of being and non-being will continue indefinitely, thus creating an eternal system ...

Re: The Mahayana Is Not Diluted Theravada.
This is not in order to be contentious. But a few posts recently appear to suggest that; a) The Theravada is older than the Mahayana and is, therefore, more representative of 'pure' or original Buddhism. b) That the Theravada somehow provides the basic platform on which the Mahayana is built. c) Th...

Re: Gohonzon Scroll question
I found I cant delete this. Here is my reply in a nut shell. I learned about all of this from practice both Nichiren Shoshu and SGI. Study and lots and lots of reading the Gosho, The Lotus Sutra itself, and the Pali Canon. "Since the mind itself is the Buddha, and the Buddha is none other than ...

Re: Gohonzon Scroll question
I think the idea is to bring present the deities from the scroll. I looked up the translation. Some of it is mixed with Japanese shinto gods such as the sun and moon god ane goddess. There are boddhisattvas etc. Nichiren Shoshu anthro.. the Gohonzon. SGI not so much. I dont know about the other tra...

Re: What is an existential threat to Dharma?
In the most recent thread on the Aro gTer, the idea of what may constitute an existential threat to Dharma emerged but got swallowed up again in a number of other claims and positions. I think it would be worthwhile to probe this one in more detail. What, to your mind, constitutes an existential th...

Re: Is NMRK the definitive Buddhist path?
I'm starting a discussion on a topic that came up in this thread: https://dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=102&p=433207#p433178 My understanding has been that, according to Nichiren's Buddhism, the syllables of NMRK contain the entirety of the Lotus Sutra, which itself contains or embodies (what...

Re: Wiccan arts and the Mahayana
The Buddha does talk about sexual promiscuity (one of the precepts) as they do in the movies.
Comparison. Wicca didnt exist in The Buddha's day. Id say Tantra and other mystical practices may be considered magic. Who knows. I dont use the term magic. Sounds too scifi fantasy

Re: Wiccan arts and the Mahayana
I started watching American horror story coven and was greatly interested in Wiccan arts. I’m not abandoning the dharma haha but this may just be my hobby. Anyways I once went to a Wiccan shop , smelled their herbs and investigated their products - a very weird and demonic presence I felt. ( I have...
