Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

For my part it would be a privilege to sit down with a Muslim contemplative and talk schools and practices. Maybe attend one of their meditation practices, if suitable.

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

Sin is not karma for example. In the Abrahamic faiths, humans are simply punished by a god. The law of cause and effect is simply said to be the way things are, not the will of a god or Buddha. In addition, karma brings many more effects than just what you could equate to God's punishing of sins. F...

Re: Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

lol one possible distinction is that I'm sitting on a cushion in one case and in the other walking around. but more seriously, one possbility is time on the cushion makes the bodhihsattva practice elsewhere possible; accordingly, a distinction between the two is expedient, showing a complementary re...

Re: Split from When the Monks Met the Muslims

I take some instruction from the Nirvana Sutra; fascicle 7 page 206 from the BDK translation; The Bodhisattva has shown himself entering the shrines of certain deities and going forth to cultivate the path of other dharmas. He has made plain his understanding of the observances and ceremonies practi...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

I had occasion to work with an ex-army infantryman- he got busted up in Iraq 2 and a sharp guy, and did actually receive a good bit of instruction in the Army. It was mostly military doctrine but we had a number of conversations tracing modern procedure and methods back through history; consideratio...

Re: When the Monks Met the Muslims

A short exposure to Catholic/Protestant contemplatives and the their practices used to handle and compose the mind shows we have more in common than may be evident, particularly when viewing the question from a belief perspective.

Re: What is the best way to deal with a roommate who acts up (acting irritated)? Reward with attention or ignore?

Moving out is one method, in the meantime it might be helpful to work out your own boundaries; what behavior is acceptable to you and what to do when they are violated- not something to control others with but so as to manage your own experience. Detaching when things get to your own comfort limits,...

Re: Is there anything wrong with smoking marijuana, as a Nichiren Buddhist?

Intoxicants can be of general concern, as per the Precepts. Legality aside, habit-forming substances can be an impediment over the long term, not to mention the effects of weed on the lungs. Which is not to say people should not or must not, but that there will always be tradeoffs, and aside from th...

Re: Is there anything wrong with smoking marijuana, as a Nichiren Buddhist?

Nichiren explicitly cautioned Shijo Kingo on use of alcohol, it seems reasonable that one could view marijuana similarly, as an intoxicant. What do you think?

Re: Do you practice with Nichiren Shu, SGI or Nichiren Shoshu?

It is possible the schism business will fade over time, though memories are long in many quarters and bashing other schools is an easy habit to fall into. Every few years the SGI pubs rehash the "temple issues", recounting the reasons and justifications and so on but its all 20+yr old material repub...

Re: Do you practice with Nichiren Shu, SGI or Nichiren Shoshu?

SGI, formerly Nichiren Shoshu I started practicing in late '80's because of the NSA lay outreach, and the message of the practice was appealing to me. I kept in the practice because of the people and relationships, which I suppose is why I stayed with SGI after the schism. I've spent several periods...

Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

The way I was encouraged was that chanting is not going to be a magic fix, that the chanting gradually leads to more awareness of making better choices. Or put another way, to get results you have to make the causes, and you chant to make better causes. Thats something of a reductionist argument whi...

Re: What appeals to you about the Lotus Sutra?

I find the Lotus sutra interestingly lacking in instruction as compared to many others. OTOH I read sutras looking for instruction as to conduct not for things to believe in. Which isn't to say I think the Lotus sutra is not important, but perhaps the instructions are more subtle. Peaceful Practices...

Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

Nichiren accepts Zhiyi's 5 Periods/8 Teachings which makes the Lotus/Nirvana sutras ultimate and the preceeding sutras provisional. Though considering them provisional, Nichiren also accepts them as the Buddha's teachings and thus not incorrect. Practices & principles in those sutras can only be sup...

Re: Thank you all

Since day 1 in NSA back in the late 80's, I've known quite a few openly (and not openly) gay folks in the organization, and it remains the case today. I've never heard anyone say anything about chanting to become straight or conform to some gender appearance/role- concur with Q on this, likely someo...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

I wonder about the damage of the Christian stereotype (would be helpful to define that) and who suffers. I know a number of christian folks. Many of them I would generally call devout as the intensity of their determination to practice and live the word of God as they understand it is familiar to me...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

I like Q's proposition also. For my part I consider anyone reciting the Lotus Sutra is my dharma brother/sister. Those who recite others or maybe their practice doesn't involve recitation are perhaps cousins lol. Relinquishing judgement about other schools was an interesting change.
