Re: Properly Exchanging and Debating Ideas Between Various schools

I think its great to have N.Shoshu folks on the forum. I think you're exactly right that delicacy on this topic is so vitally important- a brief review of such exchanges on the Nichiren forum finds so many which degenerate into wrangling. Given the histories its such an easy trap to fall into- sadly...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

There seems to be a lot of attention being given to a rise in depression, suicide, etc. which is being blamed on the lockdown (this is in the United States. I don’t know about elsewhere). Although it probably couldn’t be accurately measured, I’d be interested to know if people who practice Buddhist...

Re: Zen’s stand regarding ‘The Absolute’

There are also technical terms in Buddhism that are confused when poetic license is applied to turn it into a demonstration of emptiness, or whatever - a lot of the time it just looks like an egotistical demonstration of one's cleverness. I suspect the teachers who apply these methods effectively c...

Re: Zen’s stand regarding ‘The Absolute’

Since I'm working with a for-realsies zen guy, perhaps I can play here for a bit. Sometimes I wonder if all thats needed to practice Zen is to occasionally say paradoxical stuff that sounds like it should mean something. While I think such stuff can turn into fetish or at least a lifestyle accessory...

Re: What are the most minimalist or simplest forms or schools of Buddhism?

I thought Nichiren taught to revere the Lotus sutra and follow specific trainings and chants? He did view the Lotus Sutra as pre-eminent, but that is not a radical departure from some doctrines from within Tendai, from which he came before starting his own school. The basic practice is the recitati...

Re: Advice for young buddhists

the Brahma Viharas - metta, mudita, karuna, uppeccka. I've known about these for a long time, but as I'm sure you know, each time we come across a teaching anew, even one we've heard over and over, the really profound teachings just keep revealing further depths. The profound simplicity of those te...

Re: Advice for young buddhists

Thanks Q, you said it better than I, as usual. I'm all about getting outside the SGI walled garden but surely don't want to suggest leaving it and hopping from practice to practice looking for a magic fix. For my part, the practices you suggest that are not practice, are the better part of practice....

Re: Advice for young buddhists

Nichiren touches on accepting contemplative forms besides daimoku. N.Shu formally employs them- so I'd say its worth pursing, to observe effects and find out what works for you. Its quite easy to go visit other centers and see what happens, and a great change of pace. I found a zen guy I like and am...

Re: Shingon: the Tibetan and Nichiren connection?

Nichiren had a complicated relationship with contemporary esoteric buddhism; to wit his frequent criticism of esoteric rituals used for protection of the nation and his views related to pre-eminence of the Lotus Sutra within Tendai and elsewhere. Simultaneously, he used esoteric concepts, perspectiv...

Re: Reality and wisdom

I think the Nichiren response is that chanting, recitation and so on work in the ordinary state of clarity, and polish it- right here, right now. Literacy is not required, but if present, it also can be used. There is an expectation of results; change in the person him/herself. What that change amou...

It also might be well to state how long the session is, what will happen and stick to it- as well as other things like lights will be dimmed, eyes closed, people are free to sit in chairs, basic encouragement such as "if you notice your mind has wondered, then you are succeeding at being aware". Per...

Doubt is also used as an expedient; the skeptic is encouraged to prove the practice doesn't work by trying it.

Re: Path to full enlightenment

From an SGI/Nichiren standpoint, the newcomer is encouraged to chant for some kind of change; such as the oft-mentioned chanting for a car, a better work situation, etc. The idea is that a measurable outcome shows the efficacy of the practice. But those are expedients. By getting the car, gratitude ...

Gonna need a job like these guys had if you want to pay your bills in the idyllic world without electricity and modern equipment; that was part of a high-tech plant in the late 1800's, early 1900's. This pic was likely taken before WW1, in the foundry facility built in the 1890's, hence the accumula...

I was meditating at a center a while back, just after we sat the neighbors started up a pair of chainsaws to clear some undergrowth. Which was more distracting, the chainsaws or the birds when they stopped to refuel?

Don't want to be that guy, but lately it almost seems like he is under a STRONG influence of his daughter. There is something toxic in that family. how is it toxic, if members of a family help each other and influence one another in the process? I think schadenfreude, though sometimes feels extreme...

Re: Zazen and Creativity(question)

+1 on getting in contact with a zen teacher, even if its just informally by email. I recently joined an online sangha run by a guy I've been dharma stalking for a while, the big hurdle was to just send the email. Its amazing how quickly understanding can change in simple conversation with others vs ...

The Surangama sutra takes up the issue, but maybe does not have the particular quote.
