Re: Do you practice with Nichiren Shu, SGI or Nichiren Shoshu?

SGI, formerly Nichiren Shoshu I started practicing in late '80's because of the NSA lay outreach, and the message of the practice was appealing to me. I kept in the practice because of the people and relationships, which I suppose is why I stayed with SGI after the schism. I've spent several periods...

Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

The way I was encouraged was that chanting is not going to be a magic fix, that the chanting gradually leads to more awareness of making better choices. Or put another way, to get results you have to make the causes, and you chant to make better causes. Thats something of a reductionist argument whi...

Re: What appeals to you about the Lotus Sutra?

I find the Lotus sutra interestingly lacking in instruction as compared to many others. OTOH I read sutras looking for instruction as to conduct not for things to believe in. Which isn't to say I think the Lotus sutra is not important, but perhaps the instructions are more subtle. Peaceful Practices...

Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

Nichiren accepts Zhiyi's 5 Periods/8 Teachings which makes the Lotus/Nirvana sutras ultimate and the preceeding sutras provisional. Though considering them provisional, Nichiren also accepts them as the Buddha's teachings and thus not incorrect. Practices & principles in those sutras can only be sup...

Re: Thank you all

Since day 1 in NSA back in the late 80's, I've known quite a few openly (and not openly) gay folks in the organization, and it remains the case today. I've never heard anyone say anything about chanting to become straight or conform to some gender appearance/role- concur with Q on this, likely someo...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

I wonder about the damage of the Christian stereotype (would be helpful to define that) and who suffers. I know a number of christian folks. Many of them I would generally call devout as the intensity of their determination to practice and live the word of God as they understand it is familiar to me...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

I like Q's proposition also. What was my proposition? lol, was piling onto tkp67's statement above "*IN MY MIND* all schools are votary of the lotus sutra and the methodology of evaluating efficiency of practice must adhere to Nichiren's teachings whcih requires deep and complex evaluation...

Re: Introducing the practice of Daimoku to friends and relatives

I like Q's proposition also. For my part I consider anyone reciting the Lotus Sutra is my dharma brother/sister. Those who recite others or maybe their practice doesn't involve recitation are perhaps cousins lol. Relinquishing judgement about other schools was an interesting change.

Re: Just As I Was Begining To Worry.

The family and I visited some friends who are doing the local small farm thing- so far they are a 0 pesticide operation; chickens in mobile coops, rotating around the fields and a bunch of beehives. The bees are happy there, strong hives and lots of honey, they are constantly sold out. They structur...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

So recruit some folks in your district and go as a group- no need to wait for leaders to do or say anything. Don't need to get a bus to find suffering, theres plenty just outside your door no matter where you live. Personally I'm not into marches or sign carrying, my place is out in front of the pan...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

Who says SGI members should not unite with others as our respective conscience suggests? I volunteer at nearby a Catholic parish church. At first they were curious, I told them I am Buddhist and that was it. Since we're busy helping the folks in the parish, points of doctrine simply don't arise- in ...

Re: Clear diagram of Chinese characters on Gohonzon?

Given the Nittatsu design is modern i dont think the Mandala books would cover it directly otoh the design elements common to all are covered in great detail- the Mandala books cover Nichiren's gohonzons and those from a selection of the 1st few generations of his lineages. i bought the black and wh...

Re: SGI had to "create" a new religion after excommunication for copyright/tax reasons?

I was in NSA and SGI now. The basic practice is about the same; gongyo, daimoku and so on. SGI has revised the gongyo books a few times, one can chart the divergence from Nichiren Shoshu wrt the content of the silent prayers. I believe I perceive a slow shift away from Shoshu in some topics; the dai...

Re: Juzu question

Short of a juzu set simply falling apart or misplaced and lost i dont think i've ever discarded one. Upgrades have relegated them to the car or luggage, same with gongyo books. otoh i have met a few people who have fancier juzus handed down in the family.

As per the Mandala Workshop, a few of the of the late surviving gohonzons painted by Nichiren bear smudges due to weakness in his broken arm. Who dares wins.

Re: Confused after Recent Dissapointments

Morning gongyo has become an important part of the day, helps me perceive better what the mind is doing & get better as not getting sucked into thoughts and emotions. I don't do "fighting" daimoku anymore, I well remember that kind of attitude from the old NSA days- I chant quietly and steadily main...
