Re: How to develop faith?

The modern SG is moderate as you see, my district is similar. Back before 1990 when we were Nichiren Shoshu of America there was a much stronger evangelical bent to the practice; campaigns of streetcorner shakabuku- handing out literature to passers-by, inviting them to meetings and so on. Participa...

Re: How to develop faith?

Its true the SGI doesn't emphasize the 4NT and the 8Fold Path which is a bummer. But why is that "a bummer"? Seems to me it's a "bummer" only from a perspective that is not the Ekayana perspective of the LS. That's fine but why should we expect the SGI to take a perspective that is not the LS persp...

Re: How to develop faith?

I've been in SGI for many years, the "actual proof" thing has been troubling for me since day 1. Lots of folks claim this or that result is actual proof but the problem is the lack of a control group. However, I had a very illustrative example of it recently in hospital after wrecking on my motorcyc...

Re: Long distance members? How does SGI connect?

That or similar values of that still happens. Q's description is exactly how I enshrined my NSA gohonzon but then my district leader was very orthodox (in the NSA sense). I've participated in fairly informal events that don't quite deserve the term "enshrining". Not that they were disrespectful but ...

""Furthermore, Manjushri, after the Thus Come One has passed into extinction, in the Latter Day of the Law, if one wishes to preach this sutra, you should abide by these peaceful practices. When he opens his mouth to expound or when he reads the sutra, he should not delight in speaking of the faults...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

We may have, at least sort-of. Back in those days I was in the DC area, later moved to Baltimore. I did the cherry blossom parade a couple times, the big chair on the DC mall, and attended a big shindig in Atlanta IIRC in 1989. I recall mention of some large activities north of the DC metro area bei...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

OTOH my friend with the R6 wants to find a decrepit old mess and fix it up, cafe it etc- so I'll pitch in. Wrenching on a bike is a great way to spend a day. A bad day in the garage is better than 95% of the other things you could be doing... Riding is better. Its a wonderful thing to hop onto a we...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

I've never settled into a make... since we're sharing  I have a Guzzi SP1000 that I started modding into a cafe racer... but then life got in the way. Also have a Kawasaki ZL900 - love this bike. Needs a little electrical work. Its a factory made drag bike with gear ratio packing in a lot of...

EGADS, N90! Sounds like a serious spill and that you are fortunate to be here! I'm glad to hear that you're reasonably OK and on the road to recovery. Bonten and Taishakuten, and the rest of the Shotenzenjin must have been looking out for you. Community is a wonderful thing. Beyond the high falluti...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

I was laid up in the hospital for 10 days in June- SGI folks kept me busy with texts, email, phone calls... will be making my 1st meeting this week, to see all those who took the time to reach out and follow Nichiren's example on taking care of members. I hope it was just an acute condition and tha...

Re: Long distance members? How does SGI connect?

If I was in Bethel AK, I'd go join up with the YK fitness center http://www.ykfitness.org/fitness/ which offers a yoga program in June/July, and chat with the instructor about meditation programs, see if any of the other locals would be interested in working up some kind of scheduled vipassana/samat...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

FWIW shortly after Nichiren passed away the various schools divided over what chapters of the Lotus Sutra should be studied and considered most important. The Fuji lineages were generally in the Hoben/Juryo only camp, Minobu taking the other position accepting all chapters with Hoben/Juryo most impo...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

As the saying goes "Faith equals daily life", the results of the practice are to be seen here and now. The "prosperity cult" thing is a degenerate case, the win is the individual's human revolution; transformation from the inside out.

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

The lion business in SGI is to suggest the practitioner adopt a fearless and strong attitude towards obstacles so as to overcome them; the lion fears nothing, and so on. As far as the youth division, I think the idea is to train courageous children to help them become courageous adults. I surely don...

Re: Three Obstacles and Four Devils

as per the Nichiren library; The four devils are (1) the hindrance of the five components, obstructions caused by one’s physical and mental functions; (2) the hindrance of earthly desires, obstructions arising from the three poisons; (3) the hindrance of death, meaning one’s own untimely death obstr...

Re: Why is it that when I chant to have better relations with others, it seems like the opposite happens?

I've never had any noticable luck chanting for things to be one way or another, but what has had results was chanting to be of service, meaning the focus being to gain awareness for the sake of others. This sort of thing fundamentally requires the development of awareness for ones' own sake as well,...

Re: Western Monastic - reasons why she left

"Ethnic" monastics and lay practitioners have a role in their respective societies, but what role do western monastics and lay clergy have in western society? I could see a general role similar to how some Christian congregations do it; service in hospitals/prisons eg chaplaincy. I was recently in ...

Re: Western Monastic - reasons why she left

In general TB is having a hard time adapting to the West. Kevin... I don't agree, actually. It is better for the west than Sutric Buddhism. Maybe. Would be interested in further detail of your thoughts on this. One thing, the concern with Books in the West might at a superficial level make what you...
