Re: why i stopped a daily Nichirenesque practice

One thing the last year or so has taught me, that the more sutras/commentaries I read, the more I practice shikantaza/vipassana/samatha, the more meaningful and transformative I find chanting to be.

Re: millions die of drug addiction

Trauma is often present but by no means universal. I've heard a number of alcoholics talk about family history with caring parents in reasonable neighborhoods and no abuse, then the drinking starts and goes out of control.

Re: Reading more widely

Also nothing wrong with starting to read a bunch of the sutras eithe. Theres a tremendous diversity of subjects. Plenty is available online as well, Bikkhu Bodhi and many others have done detailed studies of a number of sutras, a great change of pace from just reading all the time.

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

The only belief I've found fundamentally important is that the practice can work for me too if I'm willing to put aside editorializing and reinterpreting, accept my own ignorance, put in the effort to do the practice and learn as I go. This would require someone to no longer identify as an atheist ...

Re: Why doesn’t Ikeda inscribe his own gohonzon?

Post-NSA, in SGI there is a much decreased emphasis on the "sacred object" behavior, though the norms of altar design still apply and the gohonzon is enshrined as the object of devotion. Beads are not to be worn and gongyo books are kept in front of the altar not on the floor and so on. That said, I...

i know foaming at the mouth conservatives, Trump people, and tree huggers in SGI, as well as folks who dont make a production about their political views. kind of like everywhere else.

Re: Lotus Buddhism, addiction & the 12 Steps

I'm in alanon, there was no "God" problem for me in Step 3, the decision was to start doing the practice and quit with the interpreting and editorializing- it was the natural choice once it was clear I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I found Step 6 & 7 to be similar- I like Chuck Chamber...

Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

I don't think reciting the Lotus Sutra or daimoku makes one a Nichiren buddhist, there are Zen sangha who use both elements in various ways- Nichiren didn't invent the practices. What makes a Nichiren Buddhist? Perhaps to read & recite the Lotus Sutra, chant the daimoku and focus upon the gosho. The...

Re: Why doesn’t Ikeda inscribe his own gohonzon?

I'm SGI, formerly NSA- I'd like have the animosity behind us too, but I guess it will take a few generations to fade. As far as Mr Ikeda inscribing his own I think that would be entirely inappropriate, I would not own or enshrine one. It may be there are some who feel such a connection to him they w...

Re: Why doesn’t Ikeda inscribe his own gohonzon?

The Mandala Workshop folks propose that SG intends to update the usual gohonzon image to be a copy of Mr Ikeda's personal gohonzon. I have no info on if he inscribed it personally or not, but I'm quite sure the Mandala Workshop folks would not hesitate to call out such a novelty but they make no suc...

Re: How does Nihilism fit into Nichiren Buddhism, or does it?

To start with http://www.rigpawiki.org/index.php?title=Four_extremes I'm not an Aro guy but they did a nice approachable podcast on the 4 Extremes available via the link below, well suited for mobile listening. Probably about time I re-listened to it actually. Their proposition is that nihilism, bei...

He is a frequent contributor to the audiodharma.org podcasts. OTOH personally I tend to gravitate towards Andrea Fella talks.

Re: Nichiren as Honbutsu

SGI would probably say "thats what we say, but thats not the point of the practice" and then try to move the discussion into human revolution sorts of dialog eg transform yourself and thereby transform the world. If pressed, then likely the "True Buddha" proposition would be laboriously interpreted ...

Re: Is Nichiren Shu the most traditional of all the Nichiren sects?

Nichiren as true buddha is the position of the Nichiren Shoshu school, shared by related schools such as SGI & maybe others, to different degrees of emphasis. "Traditional" is an interesting perspective- its a long held position which makes it kind of traditional but still different from other schoo...

Re: How do we deal with working amongst unprofessional co workers?

concur, likewise tolerance. A lot depends on what "unprofessional" means. For instance is the conduct just annoying or is it destructive. I have a coworker with quite difficult habits of personality, the grapevine suggests this behavior is not new and unlikely to change. He teaches me to not engage ...

Re: Juzu: where can I find this style?

I've seen similar examples in SGI community center bookstores- at least insofar as the weave on the balls. OTOH those are pretty fancy beads, don't know if they would often be found. OTOH if you can find a relatively large SGI center nearby then you might get lucky. Hours and inventory in the smalle...

Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

I had a look thru the Mandala Workshop books- vol 3 page 60 lists the frequencies of figures on the known gohonzon. Amida is not present on any which perhaps makes sense given the situation, OTOH Avalokitesvara is also never present- which seems a bit obscure given the presence of the Womb & Diamond...

Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

Nothing stopping you from reciting it as a practice in itself, but I don't think doing so to a gohonzon conforms to Nichiren's intent.
