Re: Shoho Jisso Sho (All Phenomena as Ultimate Reality)

Stone proposes the foundations of Tendai hongaku arose from early Pure Land thought. Though the concept was prominent in Tendai it is not the only prominent concept nor the only division experienced among the schools. There are plenty of examples before and after of varying interpretations of hongak...

Re: Shoho Jisso Sho (All Phenomena as Ultimate Reality)

He certainly accepted ichinen sanzen, I think in a orthodox sense. Hongaku was a big division within Tendai, some viewing it as license others viewing it as something expressed thru practice & precepts. lol I wonder if the hongaku dialog is putting words in Nichiren's mouth.

Re: The acceptable bounds of behavior - Split from discussion of Shoho Jisso Sho

Spend some time in Alanon meetings and you'll hear about the same sorts of well-meaning counseling having been offered by all kinds of people in all kinds of situations- there is nothing special about SGI in this regard. "Keep doing what you're doing and you'll keep getting what you're getting" is t...

Re: The acceptable bounds of behavior - Split from discussion of Shoho Jisso Sho

SGI like any community will have the same kinds of problems with addiction and violence, there's not much that a religious institution can do about the battered wife of an alcoholic other than be supportive, which it sounds like that chapter chief was trying to do. Accepting the fact of unacceptable...

Re: Shoho Jisso Sho (All Phenomena as Ultimate Reality)

Thats an interesting quote from the Shu interpretation; we unenlightened beings "can". Is that something to be reconciled with the 10 Worlds mutual possession or perhaps the wording of the translation has unintended connotations?

Re: Shoho Jisso Sho (All Phenomena as Ultimate Reality)

don't know if i got this but it was sort of like that in the gakki....as long as you did their thing anything was forgiven/brushed under the rug... I have never yet heard a lecture in SGI saying the practice gives license or a pardon. In fact, the repeated instruction is to be an example- to demons...

Re: Shoho Jisso Sho (All Phenomena as Ultimate Reality)

There were diverse opinions about hongaku within Tendai well before Nichiren and after. I'm inclined to favor the gosho as it relates to ichinen sanzen, though not so much the NSA/SGI interpretations of Nichiren as Jogyo or the Latter-Day Buddha. Thats an interesting article Q, I never much cared fo...

Re: Why are SGI meetings necessary?

I'd try a different district. Around here i don't recall anyone being told anything about what might or might not be an issue to their face in a meeting, certainly since the NSA split at least. Such conversations, should you wish to have them, are usually held one-to-one with some member you trust- ...

Re: “Never seek this Gohonzon outside yourself,”

For my part the term means there is no outside agency empowering the gohonzon & no super-gohonzons. In a similar fashion, the practitioner is fully invested in all 10 Worlds; hell to buddha- there is nothing missing. Thus the job at hand is to train in the various practices and so express more of th...

Re: What is the goal of SGI: Why so many "Divisions," etc.?

I volunteer at a nearby Catholic church pantry, likewise run by a core group of women including the church secretary/office manager who have been doing it for well a decade. I and 4-ish other men show up for the heavy lifting and distribution days but those ladies set the policy & standards. I have ...

Re: What is the goal of SGI: Why so many "Divisions," etc.?

The ones I miss most are the 1st gen Japanese ladies- some lost the accent and learned english well some didn't. Not all of them were of the type to give direct guidance with a severe look, some did with with a simple kind gesture. Most are gone but there are a few left, not as mobile as they once w...

Re: What is the goal of SGI: Why so many "Divisions," etc.?

Re: What is the goal of SGI: Why so many "Divisions," etc.?

I find the meetings relatively superficial, too much cheering and repetition for my taste, and also indispensable. I say indispensable not because I can't do gongyo without them but the person-to-person connections with other people, though few compared to others in SGI, keep me honest and less invo...

Re: What is the goal of SGI: Why so many "Divisions," etc.?

The SGI practice that works for me involves some organization face-time, because my default is to go out into the shop and work with the machines. I don't find the face-time always comfortable but getting connected with a few other members & helping out here and there makes the practice a lot more p...

Re: What is the goal of SGI: Why so many "Divisions," etc.?

Don't know so much about "quasi-military" lol.. to me the value of all the groups is in the common ground; on many topics women work best with women, men with men and so forth. Similarly the youth divisions can also focus on topics of interest that the older folks may be less interested in. All thos...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

Lots of rational and intelligent people find themselves in abusive relationships all the time. I don't want to blame this poor victim at all but someone who gets fisted (to the point of bleeding) and raped yet keeps going back to receive "teachings" doesn't seem very intelligent nor rational. It ca...

Re: Misfortune (Please Advise)

The action of perception is subtle and variable. Apparently straightforward deduction of cause and effect one day can be seen as absurdity the next, or even 5 minutes from now. It could be the chanting makes you more aware of the customer's character- or perhaps more aware of your own tendencies tow...

Involvement or at least presence of Buddhism in politics in to some variable extent, goes all the way back to Sakyamuni himself. Or if you prefer to view it from the perspective of state Buddhism, then King Ashoka.

Re: Why are SGI meetings necessary?

I don't make SGI meetings on a weekly basis, but I try to make them at least 1 or 2 times/month, and the occasional larger community center meetings- I have subscriptions to the pubs also. I prefer the gongyo meetings, sitting down in company with others and chanting a while is a really nice change ...

Re: I've been so wrong/pure lands

I've never personally found such approaches attractive or compelling, what works for me is a story showing how the practice changes a person. What gives me confidence is the stories of those I respect, their manner of making the practice relevant and ultimately, my own experience. Where Nichiren shi...
