Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

So it's all about raising the intellectual and artistic merits of the poor in SGI. Sgi is bereft of intellectuals, they simply run away from the meetings. I was in a discussion with senior leaders in toronto who wanted a plan to bring in intellectuals. My point was , it's not something intellectual...

My father went thru that too- removed bladder and prostate. He made it through, offering prayers for your dad.

Re: Would this be acceptable to use in place of a Gohonzon?

o.p was asking about the likely Nichiren Shu perspective, but it would not be accepted in Shoshu/SGI. The SGI response at least would be to encourage its replacement with a standard issue gohonzon, depending on circumstances the local members might contribute items to complete the butsudan- candles,...

Re: Why not more Farms and Soup kitchens for Buddhist dharma centers, instead of money?

Well thats fine, and I fully support training periods in isolation- but as far as I'm concerned if thats how the monastery stays overall and it is not investing time and effort back into the outside community then its not an operation I want to have anything to do with. I donate to a couple differen...

Re: Why not more Farms and Soup kitchens for Buddhist dharma centers, instead of money?

I'm not an ascetic, but I wonder about a buddhist ascetic who chooses not to lend a hand in some way to help those less fortunate. Chalk up another one that does not understand the role and nature of monasticism. I say the monastic/ascetic should put up or shut up. I see plenty of evidence of monas...

Re: Why not more Farms and Soup kitchens for Buddhist dharma centers, instead of money?

I volunteer at an inner-city Catholic food pantry, the "proselytizing" amounts to including a prayer card in the bag of food during Easter/Xmas, there is no lecture or other message and the pantry is open to all who live in the parish regardless of their affiliation. Lots of families only eat reason...

Re: Why do we have to do continuous daimoku?

It might be that one recitation is enough for eventual realization of buddhahood, whatever that is, but I find I need daily recitation to stay comfortable inside my own head; keep free of judgement, reactivity, fear, likewise to help maintain better equanimity and so on. In addition to the daily rec...

Re: How would you introduce the practice to a friend?

Sometimes people are wedded to their misery and the beliefs that support the situation and it will take a lot of pain before there is enough reason to try to make a change. It might be your example is more instructive than what you say, demonstrating the effect of the practice.

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

Ah the Forever Sensei song goes way back, I remember it from the 90's- standard fare for youth division activities and always kind of awkward. But I've no idea how the factions will play out. It seems like a classic case of an organization eventually having to move beyond its founders; it wouldn't b...

Re: The paradox of lack of cognitive dissonance

Such considerations may be conventional deception, but ohms law works regardless- much like gravity and leaky roofs. Perfect conventional deceptions. No doubt concepts fundamentally incorporate delusion, but that does not negate them or preclude predictive utility, nor make their application futile.

Re: The paradox of lack of cognitive dissonance

Not sure what "absolute gravity" would be, or that its a meaningful term. Or are we playing at perceptions being real or an experience of mind?

Re: The paradox of lack of cognitive dissonance

Based on Ohm’s law, one can predict events, and not just explain them. Do you understand my point yet? PS Ohms law cannot predict events, Ohms law cannot take into account variables like (for example) if the person coming into contact with the electric current is grounded or not. It absolutely does...

Re: Nichiren buddhist practice

I recall a similar attitude towards other meditation practices from the old NSA days, these days in SGI I think a moderated form of it persists. As far as meditating with the christians goes and listening to the reading they offer (John Maine in this case), there is a lot to agree with wrt handling ...

Re: Nichiren buddhist practice

Thanks for emphasizing that Q, for my part vipassana/samatha methods are absolutely in addition to daimoku, recitation and gosho/sutra study. Flossing is a great analogy. Using those techniques to establish a more spacious mind helps me chant as my primary practice with greater focus and appreciatio...

Re: Continuing a practice on my own

Here is the shutei gohonzon from the old Nichiren Coffeehouse site; http://pounceatron.dreamhosters.com/nichirenscoffeehouse.net/GohonzonShu/081.html to me it really shows the development of Nichiren's calligraphic skill and the evolution of composition. It looks like a large one though, I wonder ho...

Re: Continuing a practice on my own

I did that for 10-15 years and found my practice sort of wound down and became a dusty altar where I did a perfunctory daimoku a few mornings a week. I lost the cadence of gongyo so felt really out of place and out of rhythm when I rarely attended SGI functions and it felt like a lie every time. I a...
