Re: Juzu question

Short of a juzu set simply falling apart or misplaced and lost i dont think i've ever discarded one. Upgrades have relegated them to the car or luggage, same with gongyo books. otoh i have met a few people who have fancier juzus handed down in the family.

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

As per the Mandala Workshop, a few of the of the late surviving gohonzons painted by Nichiren bear smudges due to weakness in his broken arm. Who dares wins.

Re: Confused after Recent Dissapointments

Morning gongyo has become an important part of the day, helps me perceive better what the mind is doing & get better as not getting sucked into thoughts and emotions. I don't do "fighting" daimoku anymore, I well remember that kind of attitude from the old NSA days- I chant quietly and steadily main...

Re: What's the best way to relate to the ageing process?

It's so sad that beauty fades and we get older. How do you all view getting older and losing your looks, etc? It's an opportunity to do and say whatever you want and then claim you were confused due to advanced age when you get called out on it. I can't wait  Can I use that as an excuse for sa...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

Not sure I follow... if you're saying that perception via senses (and use of technology to extend perception) is inherently anthropocentric then I guess I agree but thats hardly revolutionary or a shortcoming of science. Given that we're having this conversation on devices that exist directly as a c...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

... "things as they really are", whatever that means ... Do you have another definition of "objectivity"? Kim The day I wake up and can see both sides of a leaf then I might say I can see things as they really are. Until then I consider myself constrained to perceiving the universe throug...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

Well the person who comes up with a method of instrumenting consciousness and thus provable theories of consciousness will inaugurate an entirely new branch of science, there is no blind spot but instead a lack of testable theory. it wouldnt suprise me to have computational models of thought, gained...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

I dont see science making such value statements where gravity is more important than surface tension, and its quite obvious to all concerned that redness is not communicated by stating wavelengths. i would also propose that science is interested in scales spanning over a dozen orders of magnitude no...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

lol, the scientists and engineers i work with daily might suprise you, they could well have a more rigorous approach to ignorance and the limitations of cognition than you give them credit for.

Re: For the science and religion crowd

Just so, uncertainty and quantization error is always present at whatever level of precision and accuracy is required. This has always been well known, math and physics do not pretend otherwise. I just dont see anything new in the argument. If it brings provable or falsifiable propositions then we'r...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

Frame of reference issues have been well known and quantified to various degrees and in various ways for a long time in the physics, mathmatics realms. I dont think observer/observed problems are news to those folks- the subject first came up for me in 1st year college physics when the math became s...

Re: For the science and religion crowd

I know a few for-real scientists, physicists, mathmeticians and engineers, this does not seem to be a problem that concerns them much- nor are they prone to make assertions that "science" is going to explain everything. They work from theory, mathmatics, instrumentation always refining capability to...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

As stated in the list; I think #1 is accepted to various degrees among the Nichiren schools. I will not propose to speak for others than SGI, from their perspective I think the response would be to try and shift the argument to human revolution ie the practical application of the practice to transfo...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

Nichiren didn't coin mappo, the concept was well entrenched in Tendai before him. Dogen has his own assertions on the question- being another Kamakura era Tendai derived school. Accordingly I think impossibilities are not so easily specified, the exclusivity that some schools propose notwithstanding.

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

I grew up with SGI/N.Shoshu. I know that they discourage reading sutras, including the Lotus Sutra. SGI has changed its tune somewhat, but up until the time I left which was over 10 years ago, leaders would say things like, "Oh, well, the Lotus Sutra is hard to understand. You don't have to read it...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

I don't have the same relationship with Shakyamuni that I have with President Ikeda and Nichiren Daishonin. Have you considered that maybe the reason your connection to Shakyamuni is thwarted is because the teachers you rely on do not facilitate that connection? Nichiren is pretty clear about his v...

Re: Etsy Gohonzon store: what do y’all think?

It would be interesting to know the source of the gohonzon image, are other images offered- and how was the image printed ie, what is the stability of the ink, how will it age and so on.

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

So it's all about raising the intellectual and artistic merits of the poor in SGI. Sgi is bereft of intellectuals, they simply run away from the meetings. I was in a discussion with senior leaders in toronto who wanted a plan to bring in intellectuals. My point was , it's not something intellectual...
