Re: Nichiren as Honbutsu

SGI would probably say "thats what we say, but thats not the point of the practice" and then try to move the discussion into human revolution sorts of dialog eg transform yourself and thereby transform the world. If pressed, then likely the "True Buddha" proposition would be laboriously interpreted ...

Re: Is Nichiren Shu the most traditional of all the Nichiren sects?

Nichiren as true buddha is the position of the Nichiren Shoshu school, shared by related schools such as SGI & maybe others, to different degrees of emphasis. "Traditional" is an interesting perspective- its a long held position which makes it kind of traditional but still different from other schoo...

Re: How do we deal with working amongst unprofessional co workers?

concur, likewise tolerance. A lot depends on what "unprofessional" means. For instance is the conduct just annoying or is it destructive. I have a coworker with quite difficult habits of personality, the grapevine suggests this behavior is not new and unlikely to change. He teaches me to not engage ...

Re: Juzu: where can I find this style?

I've seen similar examples in SGI community center bookstores- at least insofar as the weave on the balls. OTOH those are pretty fancy beads, don't know if they would often be found. OTOH if you can find a relatively large SGI center nearby then you might get lucky. Hours and inventory in the smalle...

Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

I had a look thru the Mandala Workshop books- vol 3 page 60 lists the frequencies of figures on the known gohonzon. Amida is not present on any which perhaps makes sense given the situation, OTOH Avalokitesvara is also never present- which seems a bit obscure given the presence of the Womb & Diamond...

Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

Nothing stopping you from reciting it as a practice in itself, but I don't think doing so to a gohonzon conforms to Nichiren's intent.

Re: What is a good book I can read on the Lotus Sutra that is a commentary on it?

Though neither is a chapter-by-chapter commentary, Dogen's "On ‘The Flowering of the Dharma Sets the Dharma’s Flowering in Motion’ takes up some of the themes, as does Wonhyo.

Re: Hearing the Buddha's Name

SG in the US uses taiko drums very occasionally, only for special events & large meetings. In the community centers its microphones and PA. For example I wouldn't be surprised if the 50k Lions festivals this fall use taiko drums. SG in Japan might use them more often, but I've never been there. My l...

Re: Hearing the Buddha's Name

Ah daimoku in a group is great when everyone makes the harmony and keeps pace. Other times its heavy lifting when the loud/fast guy shows up lol. I like the groups of 20-ish, with the leader on mike but only loud enough to keep the cadence. I first heard it thru a high school friend, the immediate e...

Re: Photographing the Gohonzon

Hard to say why N.Shoshu is so strict about photography since a couple photographs are already available online, one from the early 1900's, another by presumably illicit smartphone, presumably others exist. Apparently the Dai-gohonzon is also not available for physical inspection (for instance the b...

Re: Practicing while in hospital

Simple is really good, I was not capable of reciting sutra or even mustering a lot of recall of the Nichiren commentaries.. just the basic chanting and scattered vignettes. The zazen method was simplicity itself, and the effects of both motivated further practice. Good luck in there, will offer pray...

Re: Practicing while in hospital

I found practice in the hospital profoundly helpful. Coming from the Nichiren side of things I chanted daimoku when fatigue and drugs permitted and used some basic zazen practices extensively when I was really out of it in the beginning. I was in for broken ribs & surgery, 5 days ICU, 5 days in reco...

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists believe in God?

WIkipedia says the first assertions of the beginnings of the Christian Trinity proposition appeared approx 110 AD.

Not sure that its appropriate to assert equivalence because the # of elements are equal in both propositions and some of the terms are reminiscent.

Re: How does one practice Nichiren Buddhism at home?

There was an Independent Nichiren movement some years ago, I was never involved but it seemed to reach quite a few folks. Some would print and enshrine their own gohonzon and set up a DIY altar. There is lots of altar stuff available on ebay, amazon etc. The basic practice is to chant and recite cha...

Re: Bodhisattvas of the Earth

SGI/NSA members as Bodhisattvas of the Earth goes way back, I don't hear about it so much nowadays but back in the NSA days the troupe didn't include any other schools, including the other deluded Nichiren schools. IIRC the reasoning went along the lines of since we were standing up to spread Nichir...

Re: How to develop faith?

The modern SG is moderate as you see, my district is similar. Back before 1990 when we were Nichiren Shoshu of America there was a much stronger evangelical bent to the practice; campaigns of streetcorner shakabuku- handing out literature to passers-by, inviting them to meetings and so on. Participa...

Re: How to develop faith?

Its true the SGI doesn't emphasize the 4NT and the 8Fold Path which is a bummer. But why is that "a bummer"? Seems to me it's a "bummer" only from a perspective that is not the Ekayana perspective of the LS. That's fine but why should we expect the SGI to take a perspective that is not the LS persp...
