Re: Insect karma

I’ve been afflicted thinking about this. Any help would be appreciated. ...to receive benefit from food, a mantra, a connection to the Dharma through holy objects, from positive qualities like generosity and patience, we need only be sentient beings. That’s what I had been thinking. I’d thought the...

Re: Insect karma

Sorry, I've been troubled by this and guess my original question has not been addressed. I would've thought a Buddha himself would definitely be more beneficial than the dharani that he taught or any Stupas. Yet, the Buddha-Crown Superb Victory Dharani states that “Should a person who upholds this D...

Re: Insect karma

Hello all, I was reading it in Vietnamese, though was able to find an English version of this here http://sino-platonic.org/complete/spp038_sutra_wise_foolish.pdf page 51 (pdf page 48) "Then Sariputra said to Sudatta, "In the past, during the time of Vipasyin Buddha, you also raised a mona...

Insect karma

Hello, I’ve heard that from a sutra, the Buddha pointed at an ant and said that it had taken rebirth continuously as an ant in the same place where the past 6 Buddhas had resided. That is infinitely long.... I’ve heard stories where animals obtained human or even heaven rebirth upon hearing the Budd...

Re: Working in the entertainment industry

Did the Buddha really say that you'd go to hell for merely being an actor? If so, why are many famous actors (Richard Gere, Jet Li, Tony Jaa, etc.) devout Buddhists? IMO, I do not see how providing joy to others while not inspiring them to do bad deeds (through violence or sexual exploitation, etc.)...

Working in the entertainment industry

Does Buddhism condemn those who work in the entertainment industry (actors, singers, dancers)? Is it considered a wrong livelihood to be in such profession?

Buddhism on actors

Hello all, Not sure if I understand the the passage below correctly, but it alludes that actors would go to hell. One thing I learned from Buddhism is that karma is generated by intention? And that one who upholds the five precept will will be reborn again as human? So, if an actor does not intentio...

Would that type of work generate any negative karma? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-ballistic_missile Yup, any weapons business is wrong livelihood. Could you please elaborate more this? Question on right livelihood

Would it be ok for a Buddhist to work for a defense contractor where his work involves producing anti-ballistic missiles? Indeed it's a form of weapon though one that is aimed at destroying incoming missiles and not human. Would that type of work generate any negative karma? https://en.wikipedia.org...

Karma of the Shakya clan

Hello, I have a question, especially for those who could read Chinese. According to the passage from the Ekottarāgama below, the people of the Shakyas clan in their past live were starved and had to caught and eat fish. However, such deed lead them to be reborn multiple times in hell and finally wer...

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

The idea of fragmented souls comes from Hinduism and I believe also Jainism; not sure about Taoism. In some other articles I read, he mentioned that these fragmented souls would need to join together again to take rebirth at a higher forms (e.g. multiple roosters' souls need to be integrated togeth...

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

Sorry, I’m still stuck on this, would be grateful if anyone could provide explanation stating why multiplicity of animal rebirths is not possible using scripture or well-known master’s accounts/references? Links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

YN

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

I still have doubt in my mind regarding Hsuan Hua’s remarks regarding multiplicity of animal’s rebirth. Though I do not believe such statements, they still linger and bother me. Seems like his impact is strong. I would need some sort of credible source to firm up my belief. Therefore, I am looking f...

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

Well, if you look at the OP, looks like the Master did say that, though when teaching the Shurangama Sutra, he refuted such belief. Not sure when the commentary to the Shurangama Sutra was done, but the Root Farm's one was in 1975. Did he change his mind? [/quote] I've never heard of a person being ...

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

Interestingly, when teaching the Shurangama Sutra, Master Hsuan Hua's seemed to agree that plants are insentient? Also, regarding comments that human could reincarnate at plants, didn't the Abhidharma state that plants are insentient beings? [urlhttps://books.google.com/books?id=i1ffdTIbNJkC&pg=PA69&lpg=PA69&dq=abhidharma+plants+sentient&source=bl&ots=E_Rpp-r6ZE&sig=4eHEASp670_3rhn37WHei...

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

So, I found this story about a frog being immediately born in heaven upon being killed while attentively listened to the Buddha's teaching. The frog did not have to be de-fragmented/integrated with his so-called other 'souls' for this particular rebirth. http://vipassanameditation-vipassana.blogspo...

Re: Soul fragmentation and defragmentation as Buddism teaching?

I actually saw several of his lectures with this same teaching about soul fragmentation and defragmentation. There was mention that this is a common teaching in Chinese Buddhism? Wonder besides Master Hsuan Hua, who else has taught this? it's actually not that uncommon a teaching..look up hun and po...
