Re: Garchen Rinpoche: The Samadhi Empowerment teaching
My guess is, that if there were other requirements, Garchen Rinpoche would have spelled them out. Hm, asking again because I'm not sure if "requirement" was the right word. I meant to ask if there is an obligation, like a daily formal practice of the sadhana. I have re-read the transcript...

Re: Garchen Rinpoche: The Samadhi Empowerment teaching
I find this fascinating. So this is a form of self-empowerment? Outside of bodhicitta, is there no requirement for this empowerment since it seems to be a form of "meta" empowerment for other sadhanas? My guess is, that if there were other requirements, Garchen Rinpoche would have spelled...

With respect to the branch downfalls, the first branch downfall is having sexual intercourse with a women or man who does not possess samaya, that is, someone who is unripened by empowerment, or someone who has broken their samaya. All the sources I can find connect this downfall to activities rela...

Re: CTR, polygamy, cocaine, etc: Discuss
I never know about things like this, because I can't really bridge the gap to relate (it's my fault, I know). Being a millenial from the black community, it seems like my mom was in a totally different space in the 80s from what she tells me. Even reading it, a part of me is like "Pfft, just a ...

Re: The Future
@sillyrabbit I think the same. And I feel confirmed with what I hear in DJKR's speeches (you may find him controversial or not, but as it comes to cultural affliction he expresses self-reflectedness what is to be seen rarely with Tibetan lamas) In Mexico a lecture participant had an issue with &quo...

I'm going to have to defend my fellow millenials here. You can want to "get drunk and laid" and still recognize that there's something missing. Being on the inside, I have had the exact opposite perception of a lot of what is expressed about us in this thread. Sure it's all of our "ba...

A number of good suggestions in here: http://thubtenchodron.org/2011/06/moment-by-moment-practice/ Like: Before you eat or drink, think: I am going to make this food (drink) offering to Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, who is the embodiment of all the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha, in order to attain full awak...

Re: Pagan Deity Propitiation by Dharma Siblings
I think it's more about the assumption: are we assuming that the connections will result in our regression or their awakening? I favor the latter view, but it's not like I go looking for the more malevolent ones. Wouldn't this really depend on who you are, the nature of your relationship, and who t...

Re: Pagan Deity Propitiation by Dharma Siblings
So if we make Sang offering to satisfy all the four guests...do the local spirits in our own area have a samaya? What possible connection could they have with dharma? Would you not agree that contact between sentient beings results in karma? Of course we hope that our actions result in positive con...

Re: What's an emanation?
I'm bringing up this topic again because, as it turns out, this theme is consequential for how some practitioners approach their practice, and how certain practices are understood. To give an example from a DW thread a few years ago, here are portions of some posts that show how one particular inte...

I don't quite understand how some lineages of tantric yoga can be continued if the lamas who are not monks are prohibited from having sex (with possibly also a female in the same sect?). Do people expect these lamas to miraculously just “get it” and educate us without going through a householder’s ...

Re: Jealousy, but not about status?
This is a good idea. I've tried to apply sympathetic joy to those situations, even in that moment when I wanted to cry, but it always felt fake. Yes, I can relate. Fake practice isn't fun! Sometimes the best we can do is make the aspiration. Sincere practice isn't always easy, neither is overcoming...

Re: Tibetan Pure Land
Amitabha's mantra in Tibetan Buddhism is OM AMI DEWA HRIH, and like MiphamFan mentioned, Tibetan Pure Land practice is not as exclusive as Japanese Pure Land practice is. Medicine Buddha practice is a path to Sukhavati as well. Interesting about the Medicine Buddha practice as I thought his mantra ...

Jealousy, but not about status?
Upon reflection, I've realized that I've been struggling with jealousy for a long time. However, it's hard for me to find Buddhist advice about it. Everything I read relates jealousy to needing material things or needing praise, but, fortunately, I can't relate to that kind of jealousy. I think it's...

This is good if it improves air quality in the region. Flowers and scented candles can still engage the olfactory senses.
