Re: May this clear our delusions
Does this graphic mean that if you look at nirvana from one angle, you understand dependent origination, but if you look at nirvana from another angle, you understand emptiness? Sorry, it doesn’t make any sense to me although I’ve seen that basic picture before and have always thought it was a good...

Re: Thinking of abandoning Buddhism and its teachings
Of course, entropy increases every moment. But you have always known that. Before you ever started your practice. Is entropy a negative thing for you? Is it not bringing the whole universe into harmony?:)
Perhaps Buddhism is not the problem, but your mindset is. That is the point I'm trying to make.

Sounds exactly like the script of Dead Awake, a horror film. Hopefully, the hag has not come for you. If you watch the movie, however, you will see how to defeat her. https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fpbs.twimg.com%2Fmedia%2FDABQO4EXUAE_0yh.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fedwindiant...

Re: On Rebirth - Is it the same guy?
I wouldn't want that! If you say there is absolutely no self, is this not tantamount to nihilism? Of course not. There is a “self” which serves as a nominal designation for aggregates, but there is no actual self that is one, all, or separate from the aggregates. But "the nominal designation&q...

Also, the platform Sutra is not a Sutra, why not? Sort of like the way Pluto is not a planet? LOL No, it’s a biography of Huineng. It and other Chinese texts spurious and otherwise are irrelevant in this forum. I wasn't being facetious by the way. The people who declared that Pluto is not a planet ...

I wouldn't want that! If you say there is absolutely no self, is this not tantamount to nihilism? Anatta does not mean 'not having a self' but anatta means 'is not atman'. You are correct though that a strict reading of Nagarjuna shifts 'not-self' to 'no self'. To go out on a limb, one way of defini...

Re: On Rebirth - Is it the same guy?
I think that if we are careful in judicious, it's okay to speak in positives, such as true self and true mind as opposed to false self and false mind. No disagreement here, if used casually . One might say, “your true self is limitless” or something similar. But it’s not an actual “self”. However, ...

Re: On Rebirth - Is it the same guy?
Malcolm, I bow to your superior learning, of course, and you are right about the Perfection of Wisdom in 700 lines. It does not say true self, i remembered it incorrectly. The Sutra does make reference to true reality, true suchness, but not true self. But it does say "the view that one has a s...

Re: On Rebirth - Is it the same guy?
It's mentioned in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, Maha Prajna Paramita. I share your misgivings. But there it is. One interpretation could be that there is a trend in Mahayana to speak in positives, even though it is controversial since it could mislead some people. Remember that, although the Buddh...

Re: On Rebirth - Is it the same guy?
I am only quoting the sutra, which uses the term. However, it is not to be interpreted as a soul or atman. We know this because in the same sutra it states explicitly that 'self is just a name'. It goes on to say that Buddha is just a name too and realizing the emptiness of a name is Bodhi. I think ...

Re: On Rebirth - Is it the same guy?
Would it be right or wrong to say: 1. The person who died is dead, gone, no more, not going to return or reincarnate. 2. The person who reincarnated is a NEW person, a different person, not the same guy who died. I think this is one of the most difficult concepts to grasp because it is actually dif...

Re: Why is enlightenment never mentioned in 4NT and 8FP?
I would like to read that, Malcolm. In some sutras the two seem to be conflated, but i agree that they are different.
Nirodha is a verb; nirvana a noun, are they conceptually different?
Or just two ways of expressing the same thing?

Re: Why is enlightenment never mentioned in 4NT and 8FP?
I think you are right. he discovered the middle way by practicing the Noble Eightfold Path before he had even articulated it. When he attained bodhi, he realized the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. It is not mentioned in them because it subsumes both. This would mean that enlightenme...

Re: Why is enlightenment never mentioned in 4NT and 8FP?
Actually, some may assume that the Four Noble Truths preceded the Noble Eightfold Path because the final Noble Truth instructs us to follow the Eightfold Path. However, I believe that the Buddha first followed the Middle Way and realized cessation of thought (nirodha), which then led to enlightenmen...
