Re: Hakuin

Thanks folks. I'm just learning about Buddhism especially in relation to mystical traditions of Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. Books are a necessity, "and if there is any money left I'll buy food."

Hara

We spent some time last night at karate talking about hara. How does the idea of hara relate to Zen?

Thank you

Re: Hakuin

Started reading it today. The notes are extremely helpful and I admit I would be completely lost without them.

Re: Cravings

I'm just sitting for 10 min intervals and breathing. When my mind latches on to a subject or topic I just go back to watching my breathing.

Cravings

When meditating tonight I had a strong desire for meat, red meat. Has this happened to you and how did you deal with it? I'm not a vegetarian or anything and have different kinds of meat throughout the week it was just a weird experience.

Thank you

Re: Juzu Beads

How are beads used by Buddhists? Is it similar to prayer? Is prayer that is offered by a Buddhist offered to a God, the universe, etc?

I've used a prayer rope for recitations of the Jesus Prayer. Is it anything like that?

Thanks.

Sutra

What makes a writing a sutra? Who defines a sutra?

Is there any textual criticism performed on Buddhist sutra, for example, to determine if interpolations have occurred?

Thank you.

Re: Zazen

Great question, what you'd likely actually do if training under a Rinzai teacher?

Juzu Beads

What are Rinzai juzu beads? How are they used? Do other schools use them? Does Soto Zen use them?

Thank you

Zazen

I recently read a short bio of Rinzai and loved it. The man was wild and I can identify with him in a many ways. I'm a life long martial artist so I really get Hakuin's emphasis on being physically fit for meditation. My question is, how does Rinzai and Soto differ? What teaching has emphasis in eac...

Re: Treasury of the True Dharma Eye

Thank you for info and free pdfs. I have difficultly reading on a tablet or reader but I'll give it a shot.

I just placed an order for Hakuin's Poisons Blossoms from a Thicket of Thorn, a pocket edition of the Dhammapada and Red Pine's commentary on the Heart Sutra.

Looking forward to digging in.

Red Pines had a commentary on the Heart Sutra. Any reviews from Dharma Wheel posters?

Thanks

fasting

Years ago I fasted on a regular basis, 24 and 48 hour fasts a few times a month and now I would like to return to that practice. Any tips and recommendations? How does fasting affect meditation?

Thank you

Re: Treasury of the True Dharma Eye

Recently, I tried to read one of Warner's books but he didn't resonate well with me. I'm not sure why. :ugeek: I'm still on the fence about Dogen's work. I just don't want to buy a big, expensive volume if I'm not going to understand what I'm reading. My mind is thoroughly Westernized  , s...

 Thank you. I've been debating about ordering Dogen's massive work but found Hakuin's work Posion Blossoms from a Thicket of Thorns. Any thoughts on that collection?
