Re: Cancel the Order

Excellent. Thanks for the explanations, references, and insights, here and in the PMs I received. At the same time, I do apologize to anyone who found my post offensive Hi Jeff H, Personally, I wasn't offended in any way with your post. To me it seemed like you were just asking for clarification on...

Re: Help With Judgmental Family

Honestly just try to get along, avoid conflict, and keep up your practice, you ain't changing them. I still do practice, I won't let them stop me, but it is just that the religious side (mom's side) will always "pray for me" or tell me that I have to repent; the atheists (brothers and dad's side) j...

Re: Help With Judgmental Family

Thanks to everyone for the replies and the great advice! Patiently explain your perspective when asked. Don't get into heated arguments—you don't always have to speak your mind, especially when there's a high likelihood of it leading to tussles. Purposefully causing an argument would be against the ...

Help With Judgmental Family

Hi everyone! I have been practicing Buddhism for almost 2 years now and for the most part have kept it private. One side if my family is Lutheran and very strict, while the other is atheist and also very strict. Family members on both sides have noticed that I own a meditation cushion, mala beads, b...

Re: Bardo of death may be a problem for becoming lucid

As I understand it, at the moment of death Amida guides our rebirth to the pure land and so we wouldn't have to say the nembutsu as he is there.

Re: Can women become Buddhas?

Personally I don't see how gender, or for that matter sex, race, or sexual orientation, bars someone from Buddhahood. I would assume that where it is mentioned that only men can become Buddhas it was sexism used to affirm male dominance; or simply a different way of saying that wome who become Buddh...

Re: Shakyamuni in Pure Land

Thanks for the quick replies! I worded my question oddly, I am sorry about that. What I was wondering is how do practitioners commonly view Shakyamuni vs Amida? Is there a lot more importance in Amida or are both viewed pretty much equally. Thanks and sorry again for the misunderstanding.

Shakyamuni in Pure Land

Hello, I have been looking into Pure Land (specifically Shin) and I was wondering what place Shakyamuni Buddha held in it. I know that Amida is the Buddha whose name is chanted during practice, but I just am not certain how Shakyamuni is regarded. Sorry if this has been brought up before, I looked a...
