Re: Rus-Tibetan Buddhism

An acquaintance of mine is a Kalmyk and took me once to a Kalmyk community center in West Philadelphia, to see some throat singers performing. The compound included a temple with one resident Gelug monk from Mongolia. As far as I could tell, their Buddhism was not significantly different from Gelug ...

Re: Gongyo as Practiced by Nichiren Buddhism Sects.

Nichiren's Gosho is what I rely on to understand Buddhism. My suggestion is that you search for your answers within these texts.
Is sola scriptura indigenous to Nichiren Buddhism, or is it an import from Protestantism?

Re: Gongyo as Practiced by Nichiren Buddhism Sects.

Thank you my friend, you are very diligent in your beliefs and understandings, I would like to challenge you to a debate. As an outside observer, this really sounds to me like some kind of word track you learned at an all-day shakubuku roleplay workshop. And I am not convinced by what follows that ...

Re: Kagyu residential centers in the U.S.

KTC in Shamong, NJ is a big house with a bunch of bedrooms. It's officially the US residence of the Karmapa but, well, he's never there. I suspect if you asked you would be allowed to stay a while there- very nice people. It might help if you have some kind of referral. There is a lama in residence.

Re: Chinese professing Christianity

I think this is really silly and counterproductive, it leads to more religious extremism in the long run, especially with the Saudi-sponsored Wahhabism rather than native, more peaceful Sufi adaptations of Islam. I'm not saying Sufis are peaceful, they wiped out the Turkic Buddhists after all, but ...

Re: Refuge/Bodhisattva vows

If someone has consciously turned away from Buddhism for a number of years, this would suffice to purify/ restore him? The three year thing is apparently provisional, as there is a Scripture that says that you have as many years as how old you were when you first received the Teachings to purify; j...

Re: Chinese professing Christianity

Both Buddhism and Taoism are experiencing some revival but I've been told many of the major monasteries (eg Shaolin, Wudang, Lama temple in Beijing, etc) are rife with CCP infiltrators. Likewise, Catholicism and Protestantism are allowed in heavily monitored official versions. To a certain extent au...

Re: Refuge/Bodhisattva vows

This is a question I've wondered about too. How is the best way to restore and renew broken refuge and bodhisattva vows? Is it necessary, for someone who actually broke them retakem them again at an actual ceremony with a preceptor. Any thoughts? Vajrasattva practice. If someone has consciously turn...

It's true though that the strict definition of "republic" as representative democracy is a novelty without much basis in the historic use of the term.

Re: What is an emanation?

That's mind-blowing. If it's true, that means virtually every Tibetan Buddhist has at most two or three degrees of separation from a nirmanakaya Buddha living right now. Which would raise the question of why these nirmanakayas would fight with each other, as with the Karmapa controversy (Maitreya's...

Re: Germany is Germany!

Of course most it seems will interpret such events as actions of lone wolves and not indications of a nationalist problem. A similar thing pertains in the US- less than a year ago a young white man with Confederate sympathies massacred a black church but today we are back to the single-minded hyster...

Some other comforting words NiHillary, AKA H-Bomb has used:

"It's time to think of Iraq as a business opportunity."

"Kissinger is a friend, and I relied on his counsel when I served as secretary of state.”

"Obliterate" Iran, etc.

Re: Germany is Germany!

I used to believe, or at least hope, that Buddhistm, in coming to the West, would provide a counterweight to the prevailing Western Judeo-Christian mentality of "good" vs. "evil", "us", vs. "them", etc., together with the self-righteousness and unwillingness to really examine one's own Pavlovian as...

Re: Texts that destroy ""scientific" materialism

One can no more refute materialism within a "scientific paradigm" than one can refute idealism, solipsism, etc. Science is supposed to be a restricted methodology, which requires certain presuppositions to function, but which is incapable of determining the truth or falsehood of a basic metaphysical...

Re: Texts that destroy ""scientific" materialism

The painstaking detail in which karma and rebirth are described in the sutras makes it impossible to rule it out as a mere metaphor or cultural accommodation. It's clearly integral to the whole system.

Re: Texts that destroy ""scientific" materialism

I think people living at the time of the Buddha could have quite easily seen that the Mt Meru cosmology did not match up exactly with the bare observable facts, but they retained it regardless. Something like the TO world maps... Sure. And for one thing, a 100-mile high tree at the center of the co...

Re: Texts that destroy ""scientific" materialism

A good critique of modern materialism that comes to my mind is Human Image, World Image: The Death and Resurrection of Sacred Cosmology by Philip Sherrard. His perspective is Neo-Platonist/ Christian but the outline of his critique seems harmonious with the outlook of other traditional religions. I'...
