Re: White Tara Mantra

Interesting, thanks for elaborating. Anyway - am I correct in thinking that the actual scripture that forms the basis for the 21 Tara practices (Praises to the 21 Taras) is unrestricted for purposes of reading, recitation, etc, despite being considered a tantra... whereas only the formalized visuali...

Re: White Tara Mantra

I'm interested in this idea that "front" visualizations of Tara are acceptable for people who do not have empowerments. Where is this idea coming from? Would this apply to the forms of Tara in any of the 21-Tara systems?

Re: Garchen Rinpoche's 2017 Teaching Schedule

The more we request and make our interest known, the better our chances a Drikung lama will give these wangs in the near future! Where would be a good place to voice our requests, or at least stay updated about future offerings? I'm pretty far out of the loop, and kind of geographically isolated (a...

Re: Chhinamunda / Vajrayogini?

I second Elizabeth English's "Vajrayogini: Her Visualizations, Rituals and Forms". It's an excellent resource for the various female yidams of the Guhyasamayasadhanamala. I can also recommend Elisabeth Anne Benard's book, which is a comparison/analysis of both Chinnamunda and Chinnamasta. It's a lit...

Anyone have a sense of how likely it is that Garchen Rinpoche will offer Chakrasamvara/Vajrayogini in the next year or so? What about other Drikung lamas?

Re: Garchen Rinpoche's 2017 Teaching Schedule

Bump: I'd thought that tonight's Cakrasamvara empowerment was going to stream live. Is this not so? Any info would help! It will begin in some hourrs, and we haven't any news or info regardin this yet! It's a great pity, I've been waiting this empowerment from Rinpoche in years! There's some discus...

Re: Quick Questions about Fivefold Mahamudra & the Six Yogas of Naropa

Thanks for the clarifications, both of you. My main concern is getting 'locked in' to a single approach. Actually, I'm particularly wary of getting locked in to an anti-gradualist approach which negates or hyper-distills ritual/subtle-body/visualization activities. The latter are presently my primar...

Re: Quick Questions about Fivefold Mahamudra & the Six Yogas of Naropa

Hi, I wasn't entirely sure whether this should go in the Tantra Talk forum or not, but hopefully it's general enough to fly here in the Kagyu subforum. My questions are pretty basic. Does the Drikung Fivefold Mahamudra practice encompass any of the activities associated with the 6 Yogas of Naropa? ...

Re: Empowerment with Jetsun Kushok

Thanks for your reply, Johnny. It sounds like everything will be fine. With regards to the common Tantric vows - I'm familiar with these, and I feel comfortable taking them on. The only nagging issue in my mind is with the 7th root vow. This is due to the fact that I do academic work in this same ar...

Empowerment with Jetsun Kushok

This coming week, I will be attending a Vajranairatmya empowerment and Vajrayogini blessing (followed by 7 day teaching) with Jetsun Kushok. Here is the event: http://www.sakyadechenling.com/events-2016-Jetsun-Kushok-bay-area.html Since this is actually my first initiation, and essentially my first ...

This may or may not be what you're looking for: https://www.amazon.com/Monk-Householder-Tantric-Priest-Anthropology/dp/0521383994?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 The author is trained as a sociologist, if I recall correctly, and this orientation is reflected throughout the book. A double-edged sword...

Re: Seventh Root Downfall, Academia, Public Life

I am a former academic, but when I was so employed, I made it a point to publish only within the areas of historical and anthropological investigation, and especially nothing that had to do with esoteric practices I myself am involved with. I would have considered this a betrayal of my teachers' s ...

Re: Seventh Root Downfall, Academia, Public Life

You are not violating anything because you are not sharing any of these practices with people who want to engage them but are not ripened or who will not become ripened by Empowerment. You are sharing them for academic purposes. You should, however, warn your students that if they want to engage in...

Oops, forgot to mention this little item I found from Alexander Berzin. Sounds nice, but does anyone know how he came to these conclusions? "(7) Disclosing confidential teachings to those who are unripe Confidential (secret) teachings concern actual specific generation (bskyed-rim) or complete stage...

Seventh Root Downfall, Academia, Public Life

Hey folks, First real post! I wasn't sure if this belonged in the Tantra Talk section or not. Please feel free to move it, if needed. The long story made short: I'm an academic, focused primarily on Indian Tantric traditions (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, hybrid, etc). Beyond this 'professional' engagement...

Hi!

Hey folks, Long-time lurker here, thought I'd finally jump in and start asking questions. My primary interest is the Indo-Tibetan branch of Vajrayana, but I'm also interested in Shingon, Tendai, Chan, etc. My background is primarily academic, but more recently I've decided to take the underlying imp...
