It’s because Garchen Rinpoche is metal.

I’d be more worried about their frivolity than anything else.

Dharma will never become extinct, there are no existential threats to it.

Anyway, it's really amazing how cathartic this debate has been, isn't it? I feel, like, so much more relaxed now.

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

... Here's another hypothetical, what would we think of someone from Japan who came up to us and said "if you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him"? Forget Aro, how about that wacky East Asian Buddhism? "Mu" - how legit is that? The bouncer going to let that one into the club t...

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

Problem is that somebody here is saying that the Dharma, being a compounded phenomenon, has no stable meaning and thus anything can be Dharma as long as it is written in melodic prose, does not promote rape and pillage and generally makes a person feel happy. Yes well perhaps that can be clarified ...

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

Some of Jax's stuff I see on FB from time to time seems pretty well spoken to me. It doesn’t to me, because its faults have been demonstrated in this forum and my intellect finds that incontestable. Likewise if someone claimed Krishnamurti or a used car salesman or a parrot taught dharma, I think t...

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

My personal opinion is that this is among the most well-spoken of posts in this thread. I assume you meant Grigoris’ post ... for my part seeing M-la of all people quote Kalama sutta is one of those rare DW epic moments that make it worthwhile hanging out here. And Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche ... words f...

Wait, so racism by whites moves forward and racism by other groups moves in reverse?

I am so confused.
Ok fine, both words were the wrong words to use.

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

Show me the person on this site who is supporting Sogyal (assuming that’s the drunken aristocrat you mention). Do people suspect Aro are making shit up because they’re white? No. They suspect that because they dress like clowns, have dubious sources for their lineage and lack ‘social proof’ for the...

I wonder too - could you elucidate? I’m afraid my memory is a little blurry because it was 15 years ago and we were literally down the pub for the entire night ... but as I recall this guy from South Africa was debating Christian missions with my friend who had recently been ordained as an Episcopa...

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

I speculate there is something deeper at stake, a reverse racism. What would it mean if an entirety English-speaking group not only were recognized to teach but also actually received a genuine terma? What would it mean if a completely Western sangha played the game of Dances With Tibetans more seri...

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

Are you telling me it’s taken 11 pages for all you heavy hitters to reflect whether the authenticity of a terma is distinct from the authenticity of a lineage? Dudjom is all over their websites. Quotes, essays, books, etc. Also I have to confess I find the writing on their sites fairly good. Clear. ...

Re: The Aro Authenticity Debate.

There appear to be plenty of “authentic” teachers who have been a-holes.

There appear to be some “inauthentic” teachers who appear to be conveying information which is legit.

After a dozen pages that’s more or less where we’re always going to end up.
