Re: What attainment is Ram Bahadur Bomjon (Buddha Boy)?

Venerable Śāntideva had a particular list of three attainments that I think would be particularly appropriate for him.

This is from a Google search for "Saicho PDF". Some of them are papers about Ven Saicho, but have quotations from him. http://www.tendai.or.jp/english/image/pdf/english_pamphlet.pdf http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/ps/japan/saicho_selected.pdf http://dharma-rain.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Saicho-Wr...

Re: Multiple teachers, Tibetan and Tendai, is that ok?

I didn't say you stop as a Buddha. Point is: sectarian posturing is pointless. Higher tantra, lower tantra, shower tantra, grower tantra. I'm sure we can find all manner of quotes from X or Y yogi arguing that it is better to be an ignorant worldling than a Buddha. We Buddhists seem to love making j...

Re: Multiple teachers, Tibetan and Tendai, is that ok?

Sounds to me like 是名比丘根波羅蜜因緣知果波羅蜜,果波羅蜜因緣知人波羅蜜。 This is called, monks, difference of faculties on account of causes and conditions informing the difference of fruits, the difference of fruits on account of causes and conditions informing the difference of persons. Does this lower tantra result in Bud...

Re: Multiple teachers, Tibetan and Tendai, is that ok?

Tibetan tantrikāḥ will say it is a lower/lesser tantra. Why is that? You need to ask them. They have systems of classification that postdate Shingon and Tendai. I have my own interpretations and theories as to why this tantra might be looked down upon by others, but it is better to ask them themsel...

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

AFAIK, the Buddha never polemicized against or for the Cārvāka. Do they postdate him? Apparently not; I recall a passage in the Lotus Sutra admonishing disciples not to hang with them. And there we go, Sukhavihāraparivarta Ch 14: admonishes to neither associate with 伽耶陀, Lokāyatikāḥ , nor 逆路伽耶陀, Vā...

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

As a general matter, atheism is a reaction to Judeo-Christian theism. One of the things to be mindful of, is that many of the arguments deployed by atheism against Christianity also apply to Buddhism. It used to be said that karma was 'scientific' like 'the law of cause and effect' but it's clearly...

No Rabbi managed to ask God himself... Coëmgenu imagines a rabbi. Rabbi: [to God] So, how's the wife? Happy wife happy life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnLSbIivz0M Ancient India already had their own atheists. AFAIK, the Buddha never polemicized against or for the Cārvāka. Do they postdate him?

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

If so, how does one reinterpret things like deities, Buddhist Gods, Etc? The entire Christian narrative is somewhat plausible from a Buddhism perspective. The Brahmā, first-born, of a world-system, emanated an avatar into the world of man to teach a dharma of rebirth in the company/realm of Brahmā....

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

atheism is a reaction to Judeo-Christian theism Or it is just a logical extension of it. Judaism comes from henotheistic roots (worship of one god, belief in many) to monotheism by the time of Jesus. Atheism just gets rid of one more god. Atheism is a weird word, with its meaning changing depending...

Re: Are Nichiren Buddhists usually conservative on liberal issues or?

I have heard that many Nichiren sects in Japan are traditionally conservative. I'm wondering if this is true and to what extent if so. In SGI they taught us that there are no coincidences. A prominent symbol of the Buddha is the elephant... They also say if you meet the Buddha, kill him.

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

Thanks, Coemgenu, I wasn’t sure what the specifics were, but I knew one of them was a eunuch. Yes, they are bizarre categories, and very culturally-specific, which is one reason to not put much stock in that. In the vinaya it is a separate offence for a monk to have sex with a woman, with a man, or...

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

According to the fourfold vinaya, āsittakapaṇḍaka & ussūyapaṇḍaka may ordain as monks. The others may not, for whatever reason.
