Re: Someone go tell DJKR
enough musicians, conductors, ... willingly cooperated to gain or maintain standing. Richard Strauss. Very talented. Very foolish. I have no opinion of DJKR outside of his writings, mostly on social media. The first thing I read of his was his book (really a compilation of an oral teaching series) ...

Re: Did Nichiren introduced yogachara concept in his teaching or were they already part of tendai?
This was a good thread to return to DharmaWheel for. Short answer: they were already a part of Tendai, but that doesn't mean that historical Tiāntāi didn't at one point place itself in opposition to Yogācāra teachings. The Tendai sect has also been at different times in opposition to the H...

Re: Trouble reconciling Pali/Sanskrit teachings
There are a few hints that tell us that the "Sanskrit" tradition of Buddhism is actually a "Sanskritized" tradition, hence the current term "Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit." Sometimes Buddhist texts are in a "pure" pseudo-Brahmanical Sanskrit. Sometimes they are in ...

Re: Chakravartin, Indian myth of a Flying Saucer King
I'm looking at it this way: Physical objects cannot actually travel at light-speed, at faster-than-light-speed, or even substantially near light-speed. Objects become energy. Matter dematerializes. If they can re-materialize a spaceship, they might as well just re-materialize their bodies, which the...

Re: Chakravartin, Indian myth of a Flying Saucer King
Travelling to earth through deep space, in a physical craft, i.e. a "flying saucer," is completely fantastical, so they might as well be from parallel dimensions or even the airs of the sky somehow. It's a very "human" thing, IMO, to suggest that they would need a "spacecraf...

Re: another question about rebirth
He goes on to note that speculation like those described above lead to consideration of metaphysical views - something the Buddha did not engage in. That which is "meta" physical is that which is beyond the physical, or "after" the physical. Consciousness, the dharmas, and even ...

Re: Gohonzon and buddha estatue
IMO, if you're practicing Nichiren Buddhism, you should do the practice as the Daishōnin directed. Certainly, there's nothing wrong with chanting the daimoku in front of a buddharūpa. There's nothing wrong with chanting it in the shower. But IMO (and I am not a Nichiren Buddhist, so keep that in min...

I don't particularly dispute this, but it would be interesting to see it proven. Don't they have a cosmic egg myth similar to some strands of Chinese creation myth?

One could argue that the "mind stuff" is nāman, like how the "body stuff" is rūpa.PadmaVonSamba wrote: ↑Sat Apr 16, 2022 10:59 am1. I don’t think there’s anything to support the idea of ‘mind stuff’ but then, I’m not sure what that is.

Re: Opinions on Roger Jackson's "Rebirth"?
It’s not a question of belief in rebirth, but an acknowledgement that the existential question the Buddha sought to remedy was the question of rebirth. IMO, the issue with Buddhist modernists, the sorts of modernists who jettison anything that seems "too ethnic/Indian/superstitious," is t...

The fact that you think that there's rampant "trash-talking" of him, to me, means that your perspective might be a bit skewed.
Do you think that this post is "trash-talk" of you?

Captain save a hoe to the rescue. Chris Rock should of responded by beating the piss out of him. He couldn't have done so even if he had "the balls to," as the kids say. Lots of people daily say things that they ought to be slapped for. This court jester, Rock, got slapped by an aristocra...

There's also the issue of impersonating a member of the Āryasaṃgha. This is a big no-no as far as I've been taught the Dharma. It's interesting how this is so easy to find in the prātimokṣa, but difficult to find outrightly stated in the bodhisattvaśīla. My tentative conclusion is that it was consi...

Yes, the trouble is that this isn't covered in the root downfalls, or anywhere in the Akasagarbhasutra that I see here. I'll go look again, however.
Back in the day, when the monastic Bodhisattva community was also observing the vinaya, it would be a non-issue.
