Re: Tibetan Buddhist Holidays/Holy Days?

Posting this in case anyone else has the same question as I did. I found this site which is the clearest yet as far as the holidays and their dates on our calendar versus the Tibetan calendar. This is why it was so confusing to me; the 4th month on their calendar is not April for example AND the hol...

Re: Tibetan Buddhist Holidays/Holy Days?

Have you tried this ? I have actually, but thank you. It is the best one I've found so far and I printed it out when I first found it, but I find it slightly confusing with all the "earth-water" stuff and other references. It's hard to sift through and find the basic days of observance with so many...

Tibetan Buddhist Holidays/Holy Days?

I wasn't sure which area to ask this, but most of my studying so far has been under the Gelug tradition. I have been searching for a Tibetan Buddhist Calendar (or list) showing Tibetan Buddhist holy days, observances, festivals, etc. Preferably something that explains activity/practice/offerings etc...

Re: Seeing The Dalai Lama Speak: Questions

Thank you all. Lobster, as I said in my original post, I highly doubt I'll have the chance to meet him, but I certainly want to be prepared and know what to do if the occasion should arise, so I thought I'd ask in case others have seen him and had the chance to meet him. One can hope, but I'm not co...

Re: Seeing The Dalai Lama Speak: Questions

Yes, that's the event website where I found the event and ordered tickets. But I didn't see any of the answers to my questions there and the contact person on that site that I called and asked didn't know. Is there something I'm missing on the site that answers my questions?

Thanks.

Seeing The Dalai Lama Speak: Questions

Please forgive me if this isn't the proper area for this question, I looked around and wasn't sure the proper place to post. I am thrilled to have purchased a ticket to see the Dalai Lama speak in Boston in a couple weeks. I've never seen him in person (at a live event) before, and I have a couple b...

Re: Bringing the Dharma to Others

Hi thornbush You don't have to lose a single word about the Dharma! Be the Dharma. Once people start noticing your extraordinary calmness, serenity or situational wisdom, they will be curious. When they are curious, their mind will be open. They will try to emulate your calmness, serenity and wisdo...

Well, that just seems unnecessary. You know you don't have to click and comment on a topic if it seems uninteresting to you, right?

Re: Haven't Been Meditating: Advice?

It is also a good idea to contemplate a little the four thoughts that turn the mind to the Dharma. You can read about them here: http://www.berzinarchives.com/web/en/archives/sutra/level2_lamrim/overview/general/4_thoughts_turn_mind_dharma.html Funny; I just checked out your link and realized these...

Re: Haven't Been Meditating: Advice?

Yes, I do know this, but I have trouble living it. I'm like that in many regards. I can't seem to clean a little here and there, I have to clean my entire house. I just have a bad habit of being very perfectionistic, and needing to do things to my full satisfaction or I tend to not to them at all. ...

Re: Are plants sentient?

Very interesting Padme. :thanks: Don't walk on a flower but on the grass. Sentient or not, there is our interrelationship. Yes, for sure. Like the article said, a tree may not 'feel it' if you cut it down, but it may still be a wise choice not to cut it down for other reasons, for animals that live...

Re: Haven't Been Meditating: Advice?

The only thing you need to meditate is floor to sit in. The rest is nice, but not necessary. Maybe it's becoming a problem, no? Sometimes we do it to steal away time from the "real practice of sitting" (that at the beginning can be a bit boring) while still being in "practice mode", thus feeling be...

Re: Are plants sentient?

Here's an excerpt from an interesting article I read a while back. The article happens to be referring to veganism, but the remarks about plants and sentience apply here and are interesting. "...One of the questions most frequently asked of any vegan is: “what about plants?” Indeed, I do not know an...

Re: Are plants sentient?

In other words, you are conscious only if you are conscious that you are conscious. Is there any other kind of conscious? It is this aspect of consciousness that differentiate sentience from insentience. Based on this, a computer is not sentient. Hence, even though a very clever programmer may be a...

Re: Are plants sentient?

Padme, It would appear to me that you are saying that sentience and consciousness are emergent phenomena of the brain. In Buddhism, at the very least, mind and brain are interdependent, neither being an emergent phenomenon of the other. No, I'm not saying that at all. I'm not saying anything about ...

Re: Are plants sentient?

Well, if we put Buddhism aside for a moment and just study the definition of Sentient, which is: 1. Having the power of perception by the senses, conscious. 2. Characterized by sensation and consciousness. Based on the definition as I understand it, I would conclude that although a plant or other li...

Re: Haven't Been Meditating: Advice?

Hi Padme Just wanted to say hang in there. One suggestion: you could go through your pre meditation ritual--every day. Basically, just get into the posture you use --every day, without missing. Then when you are completely ready to meditate, get up and go about your daily business. There's somethin...

Re: Lojong: The 7 Points of Mind Training: Resource?

Just a follow up to my original post. I found an audio CD set from Pema Chodron, a new release called "Be Grateful to Everyone": An In-Depth Guide to The Practice of Lojong. I've listened to 2 of the 7 CD's so far, and it is excellent! I'm finding that I'm taking a lot of notes. There are also exerc...

Lojong: The 7 Points of Mind Training: Resource?

I've been able to find a list of the 59 Slogans, but does anyone know of a reasonably basic breakdown of the meanings of each slogan? Some are obvious, but others I could use help interpreting. Any links or books? Thanks.
