Re: Black & Buddhist in America - 2018

Pondering a little about it, I think the reasons we don't see many black people in Dharma groups may not be so different from those behind we not seeing many of them in erudite music concerts, museums or art galleries. I think Johnny pretty much nailed it.

Re: Black & Buddhist in America - 2018

I never attended a group where race or gender mattered. If I noticed that to be the case, I wouldn't return. That kind of discrimination among Buddhists doesn't fall short from an aberration. I remember a small group of Buddhists that gathered in a small, very beautiful Ling in a very beautiful old ...

Re: Another Topic of molesting female practitioner

It takes some realization to be a teacher, especially in Vajrayana where things can go sour pretty fast. Not having it while taking students is the stupidest move possible. Beyond being a case of a blind leading the blind, things tend to get messy all around. Making a living out of Dharma is also an...

Re: Another Topic of molesting female practitioner

Although in certain cases where abuse ends up happening we may find some degree of shared responsibility for the outcome, in the particular case of it happening in a guru/student relationship, I think we can't use the same standard. Even if a student is very seductive and wants to have sex with his ...

Yes, it is exactly that simple. And yes, not easy in so many ways.

Well... Dubai is not the norm for the Arabian world in more ways than one. But it's a good sign.

Re: denotation and designation in yogacara

Seconded. But I find a little puzzling that you still want to post in a forum administered in such way. Having pledged himself against me, he does not even read the refutations of his personal inventions, declaring that "he never reads beyond the first stupidity." And nonsense for him is all that c...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

I'll try to help the OP somehow. After being a Theravada Buddhist for about 12 years, I'm starting to question my compatibility with this school. In the communities I frequent, renunciate practices like Satipaṭṭhāna are heavily emphasized over traditional lay and devotional practices. This is probab...

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism

Renunciation is part of every Buddhist tradition or school, in the sense that if you don't get disenchanted with samsara, you don't feel the need to practice. If you continue searching for happiness in the wrong sources, you're bound to perpetuate suffering. Renunciation is recognizing which are the...

Re: Trauma and the public mind

My impression is that it began in the public school system, maybe around the time when mainstreaming began. Children with widely varying abilities of all kinds started sharing classrooms; it became necessary to teach children that children who are otherly-abled, for lack of a better term, are still...

Re: Trauma and the public mind

I think Johnny may be overestimating the influence of psychology on society, but he has a point. Secularism didn't produce this kind of phenomena on Communist countries, but their social context was very different. However it still plays a role in western civilization exactly in the way you put it, ...

Re: Trauma and the public mind

Victimization and micro aggressions culture, Johnny. Very tipical of the "ME generation". Almost expected as a consequence of the (baseless) self esteem movement.
It's a 1st world fad. It will pass in one or two decades by itself.

Re: For the science and religion crowd

The sole rationale for Buddhism is the cessation of suffering. That goes far beyond consoling, my friend. Cessation of suffering by the 8fold Noble Path. If we waste this human life, the probability of getting another that allows us to practice Dharma is compared to the chance of a blind turtle eme...

You’ve got to admit that if Tara is real, and if she is both willing and able to help out with life’s problems, it would be a shame to dig your heels in and refuse to call on her.

Just sayin’...
I won't argue that. It would be like telling someone feeling cold not to walk in to the sun.

For many years, like others here I would take this kind of question as an invitation to a metaphysics party.

Now I think the best answer is simply: yes.

Re: Do Bodhisattvas and non-historical Buddhas "exist"?

When it is said that a deity “is the nature of your mind” I think it important to emphasize that “the nature of your mind” is something initially hidden or unknown to us. Therefore the deity, for all intents and purposes, seems foreign, “other”. It is outside our present experience. We should not r...

Re: Do Bodhisattvas and non-historical Buddhas "exist"?

All kinds of problems start when we assume there's a reality out there that exists on its own and we're just here observing it, having no participatory role in it. How were things before we observed them? How were things if we take space, time and matter as absolutes? How are things without US? How ...
