Re: Confused about nature of mind introduction

Faith is a very generalist word. I prefer informed confidence. You trust the teacher and the method after careful analysis. You give it a go and if you do things properly you'll get results. When you face an obstacle, you investigate it, search a solution and move on. When needed you consult with t...

Re: Tantric Empowerment and Dzogchen

If I were you I would try to attend the teachings of a few Lamas. I would get to know their sanghas and see how they role. Hang around for a while and see if things fall in place. After having some knowledge about these dynamics, then I would consider taking empowerments. Find a teacher and a sangha...

Re: The Teacher-Disciple Relationship

I had more than one teacher. Some I no longer visit, by one reason or another, usually because they live in another country or other usual things of life. I have deep feelings of gratitude towards them all. It's natural to have more than one teacher. I find very, very strange when teachers want excl...

Re: The Teacher-Disciple Relationship

I believe there's a saying about it that compares the teacher to a flame or something. Too close it will burn you. To far it won't warm you. Anyway, it's better if you like your teacher. However, it helps a lot if you approach him in a healthy way, knowing what is his role and what isn't. Sometimes ...

Re: The Teacher-Disciple Relationship

I have a hard time seeing that working, especially because people holding the title of Dharma teachers should above all be examples of compassion. From the part of the student, I think its hard to be inspired by someone he doesn't like, let alone feel any measure of devotion. We may prefer one teach...

Re: Origin of mankind and animals according Buddhism.

Buddhaghosha is at any rate not normative to Mahayana Buddhism. And you are extending your argument beyond reason by going on to the topic of world formation. The fact is we don't have many other scriptures of weight besides the aganna sutta that gives a human creation myth. Which also means it is ...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

. I'll say this; his book has probably done more to promote Dzogchen in the general public than DW. In particular Dzogchen is promoted to that part of the public who would usually have zero interest in that type of topic. So even if his presentation doesn't meet DW standards, how is that a bad thin...

Re: Confused about nature of mind introduction

Err... I was commenting Kevin's post... where did it went?? ---------- I'm not saying it's better. I'm saying I don't believe 10 recitations can grant you rebirth in a Pure Land. Perfect faith... how can someone have perfect faith in that? It's believing just because! Salvation through belief... no ...

Re: Confused about nature of mind introduction

The caveat is that since a single day there is many thousands of human years long... I'm sure time passes quickly in Sukhavati... Consider that most people born there have to wait five hundred years in that land before they can even hear to see Amitbha, 500 Sukhavati years that is... Even so... bea...

Re: Confused about nature of mind introduction

Still don't buy it. Just because it's written doesn't mean it's true. I just can't see how that would work, you see? Forget karma. We make ten recitations with the aspiration to be reborn in a pure land and we're off the hook? I mean, ten recitations are something so easy to perform that I wonder w...

Re: Confused about nature of mind introduction

I wouldn't mind. Thousands of years in a Pure Land with enlightenment at the end is not a bad scenario. I just can't see how it works. You make ten recitations, discover shit about your true nature, let alone stabilizing anything, purify eons of karma and gain rebirth in a Pure Land? No way in hell ...

Re: Confused about nature of mind introduction

However, Ati guruyoga is about the easiest practice in the world. Do you mean easier than Amitabha chanting of Pure Land Buddhism? I understood birth in Sukhavati is guaranteed by saying his name ten times. You mean, you say the name ten times and it's guaranteed rebirth in a Pure Land? Without wan...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

The problem as I see it is that people dont really believe what Dzogchen teaches while at the same time trying to practice it. The result is a cherry picked Dzogchen "system" mixed with other views and yanas. They lack faith in themselves, in the teaching, and in the Guru. Few people try to just pr...
