Re: Reading more widely

Thing is and this is vital... Nichiren read everything that was available in Buddhism in all of Japan... The study of Tibetan Buddhism is considered a whole Buddhist Study for it covers both Mahayana, Tantra, and theravada..everything... i was amazed when i first studied under a Rinpoche....for me i...

Re: superstition and Nichiren's Teachings

you know it was this site and the people on it that sparked new thought in me. I used to get it and know...you people put a wrench in those gears.... I never gave God the Creator, in any form ..pantheistic or just the base line wisdom in physics that allows for all these realms of samsara any though...

superstition and Nichiren's Teachings

I was always under assumption that buddhism would always hold up to scientific investigation. In the thread on atheism some of the material got me to thinking . these are the main culprits! One of the things to be mindful of, is that many of the arguments deployed by atheism against Christianity als...

Re: Is there room in Nichiren Buddhism for an atheist?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPb8tb3D6N0 If so, how does one reinterpret things like deities, Buddhist Gods, Etc? As a general matter, atheism is a reaction to Judeo-Christian theism. Ahhhh the quest to know EH! Will someone explain it plainly please!!!? There is not one solitary text on the mat...

Re: Is it an oxymoron for a Nichiren Buddhist to be Republican?

Note the OP title is about 'being a Republican'. exactly! so lets define the modern day republican. i failed to note that it seems to outsiders republican party is home for white supremacists, homophobes, racists , bigots. Even the republican president presently is accused of being all these things...

Re: Is it an oxymoron for a Nichiren Buddhist to be Republican?

Don't shoot the messenger: I'm not american, but most people outside the USa have their own views on what it means to be a democrat or republican. In my opinion the recent media coverage the past couple of years enforces those fears about republicans. I'm trying to be fair here when i say media cove...

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

As per my comments: I try to stay as close to edicts as laid down in the lotus sutra when practicing . I ask about those edicts and think about them constantly. In this case ,even though it is a gay sex thread, any sex should be considered . whether it is by your self or a partner or partners ,in an...

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

Focusing on having any form of sex for anything other than procreation is a distraction from time spent on spiritual practice. Why would sex for procreation not be a distraction from time spent on spiritual practice? Depends on what one considers spiritual. Procreation in and of itself is spiritual...

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

I think if one's focus is on the worldly and mundane one detracts from the work at hand. Those who think that everyday life is a hindrance to their Dharma practice haven't discovered that there is no Dharma outside of everyday life. Eihei Dogen A woman is enlightenment when you’re with her and the ...

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

I think if one's focus is on the worldly and mundane one detracts from the work at hand. This form of sexual behaviour while being a distraction, is something that seems important to some. Why is gay sex a focus of a practitioner's life . We are striving to access the spiritual body and develop our ...

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists believe in God?

Well at the end of "my" day i see a world i live in fraught with peril. The teachings i rely upon by which i wish to develop and improve my"Lot" are all from thousands of years ago , or based on people that lived thousands of years ago.... The only thing i have faith in is thus: The hope that there ...

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists believe in God?

I sort of get your point, M, but that term "God" is loaded with meaning that does not match up with Buddhist teachings. More critically, that word carries a lot of baggage for people coming to Buddhism from a theistic background. IMHO, its best to not draw that connection and instead maintain disti...

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists believe in God?

I've been watching this thread and would like to just ask ; Why is it that people always resort to a myopic historic account of what God actually means? I have always loathed Dawkins definition and his mocking of something he has no clue of other than his debasing parables and metaphors . How in sam...

Re: California wine radioactive

Snopes to the rescue - as always! The EPA threshold for acceptable amounts of arsenic in drinking water is 10 parts per billion. Which, as you probably can figure out, is not very much at all. Now it’s quite logical on one level to be worried about a wine that exceeds that level. But on the other h...

Re: Big messages to deplorables ???

So a political system designed by and for wealthy white male landowners is inspired on par with Mahayana teaching? Motivations matter. It matters that the founding fathers of the USA were slave owners. It matters that they oversaw genocide of the native peoples. Obviously all nations are works in p...

Re: Big messages to deplorables ???

I don’t think you’re incorrect on that point. My point is, who would trump get replaced with? Only another bush, obama, or clinton? Yea people like Bernie Sanders, Cynthia McKinney, Ron Paul, and Ralph Nader might be a little better than all of the above; but I still think we’re going to have to do...
