Re: Why and how did karma come into existence?

I thought the dalai lama says science and buddhism go hand in hand??? Just because scientists believe that the world came into existence from a big bang meaning out of nothing that doesn't mean that laws where not created at the start or gradually over time. Such as the law of gravity. I like to vie...

Re: Why and how did karma come into existence?

Karma is based on the law of causality which negates the possibility of a beginning: there cannot be a first cause because that would be an uncaused effect. The way you state it makes it sound as if there was no karma until someone killed someone else without cause or reason -- and then karma “bega...

Why and how did karma come into existence?

What did the first living organisms deserve bad actions from others since they didn't do anything bad? When space and time began. Or does their past lives from before the end of space and time were filled with bad karma cause that result? Maybe it wasn't killing maybe it first started with other neg...

Avoid idle talk

He kept himself(Buddha) free from idle talk, and then wished that all might know the blessedness of a sympathetic understanding.

What does sympathetic understanding mean here?

all emotions are pain?

What does that mean that all emotions are pain? Are they saying that all emotions whether they feel good or bad to us from our perspective is not purely pleasurable but has some pain? Such as romantic love can give us the pain of sleepless nights but otherwise feel happy. Do you have something that ...

what the buddha didn't teach

Is there a good book or article that lists all the things added to Buddhism that wasn't originally taught by the first buddha? I know there is a book on what he taught( "what the buddha taught"). Does that book tell specifically all the things that were later added by chance? Maybe I really want jus...

Re: Karma rebirth predators

Opposites attract negative and positive good and bad you can't have one and not the other. How can predators be causing themselves bad karma when they are just following nature in keeping populations from overflowing in the biosphere. I am making the argument that killing other animals could be seen...

Re: Karma rebirth predators

If karma exists. What happens to wolves or other predators that have to intentionally harm other creatures to survive? They have a reason in the biological sphere that they keep populations down and thus keep the food supply from being entirely eaten. They go to the other lower realms or stay anima...

Re: free retreat

I am not sure which I would like to. I am still figuring that out. I want one that does exercise and martial arts so would that be Shaolin? Just Yoga and calisthenics are fine also. I got a bunch of workout DVDs for fitness by Shaolin monks. The closest big city to me is Saint Louis in Missouri but ...

free retreat

I would like to go on a Buddhist retreat. I do not have a whole lot of money. I was wondering if I could pay some other way than monetary. I want to go on a retreat to see if Buddhist monk life is for me before I go all out and be committed. What's all involved? what should I expect? what are the ru...

Recommended books newbie

What do you recommend books translations and paraphrases of Buddhist texts? I have the dhammapada translation by f. max muller. What was taught by each buddha that came after the first buddha? So I can differentiate between their teachings. Is there a book that indexes all the different teachings? L...
