Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

I agree, the aspiration is the beginning. It's very true! I am deeply grateful for all of the encouragement and support. I know that things will take time and determination. It's so easy to become discouraged but having the right perspective will help too. Thank you, really. Some things take longer ...

Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

Thank you for this. I completely agree. Reminds me of a book by William Woolard. I think his way of viewing the daimoku is quite similar in terms of "benefits". Thanks again my friend. The way I was encouraged was that chanting is not going to be a magic fix, that the chanting gradually leads to mor...

Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

Ty for your help and your encouragement. This is a very supportive community. There could be a number of reasons you're not seeing benefits. Let's work on this together until you see some results. First, keep in mind that the Gohonzon is the Buddha, and the Buddha's desire is to see all living being...

Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying exactly. In other words, say you're looking for employment but you don't put in applications. We can't expect the power of Daimoku to just grant us a job if we're not also focusing on making good causes. Right? Why would you question about getting employ...

Re: I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

"This is the practice at work opening your eyes". You hit the nail on the head. I concur. Ty for your encouragement. It is most greatly appreciated. I found the notion of poison to medicine is very powerful. There was no change in external circumstance but rather I was able to perceive the challenge...

I'm finding it hard to make positive changes in my life

I chant but it seems like I keep throwing myself in my own way. Is this because I just expect chanting to make my life better rather than also taking concrete steps to move in a positive direction? In other words, say you're looking for employment but you don't put in applications. We can't expect t...

Re: Is the Pure Land an actual place?

Thank you for your help. I hear that chanting the Nembutsu is good for your health, good luck, etc too. Yes it is a definite place like our Earth. Buddhist sutras describe planets and worlds system apart from our Earth where different types of living beings exist. Our Earth is one such planet where ...

Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

According to Nichiren there is only one precept, NMRK. Following the 5 precepts is a supplementary practice, strictly speaking, and it can be encouraged. Because its really basically good advice on living an ethical life, and basically derives from the one precept. Supplementary? How so and, how do...

Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?

It seems like Lotus Seeds (a Nichiren Shu primer) teaches that in Nichiren Shu, the precepts are followed, at least the 5. Can anyone confirm this?

What's the best way to relate to the ageing process?

It's so sad that beauty fades and we get older. How do you all view getting older and losing your looks, etc?

Re: Something I'm missing....

I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement and your insight. Ty If i may address the whole gay thing and religion. Something I'm missing....

For the past few years, I've been feeling like something is missing in my life and since I no longer identify as a Christian (walked away years ago) I've sought after a reference point, something to lean on and to provide me with tools to live in a better way. No matter what other religion or philos...

Re: Would this be acceptable to use in place of a Gohonzon?

If you’re “unaffiliated,” I guess it would be okay, but a Nichiren Shu priest would issue a new person a “temporary” mandala (I never had one of those, so I’m not sure what they look like exactly) until your jukai and then they’d give you a Shutei Mandala Gohonzon. Too bad there's not even a Nichir...

Where did you find that? I haven’t seen it anywhere before.

How important is forgiveness?

I recently had a big miscommunication with a close friend, leading to an argument. Honestly, we were both intoxicated and said hurtful things. Nevertheless, I reached out to said friend and apologized for my part in things but I can't help feeling bruised still. Anyway, how important is forgiveness ...

Why do we have to do continuous daimoku?

Why can't we just say it once and achieve the state of Buddhahood. I'm trying to understand why the repetition.
