Re: Anyone know what happened to Padma Rigdzin Ling?
The website says it's being updated. The Padma Rigdzing Ling Facebook page was quiet for a while, but they posted again on March 7 about prayers for the deceased. So they appear to still be active,it looks like Rinpoche probably just got out of retreat. I'm betting the website will be back up soon.

Re: karma and Amitabha Pure Land rebirth
We have this chinese term called 带业往生 when referring to rebirth in Sukhavati. It means rebirth by bringing our own karma with us. Amitabha will accept anyone despite their karma as long as one fulfills the 3 conditions (faith/vows/practice). Once reborn there, the karma that you have won't be allow...

Re: karma and Amitabha Pure Land rebirth
Your view of karma seems to be more like the Jain understanding of karma, where it has to all be burned off before awakening is possible. That's not how karma is understood in Buddhism. Buddhas have transcended karma.

Re: Pure Land Reading Group by Zoom
There's temples that do things on Zoom now, and sometimes stream on Facebook as well. The Jodo Shu North America Facebook page seems to livestream Otsutome. According to their Facebook page they are attempting to build an online following. The Utah Buddhist Fellowships is an online group associated ...

Re: Amitayus Vase
A connected topic is the question where the Amitabha/Amitayus-divide come from. I know that one is the Dharmakaya and the other the Sambhogakaya. But does this come from the fusion of different lineages or different applications. From the Nyingma tantric classification: dharmakaya of dharmakaya is ...

Re: What does practice really look like
Basically every line of a sadhana describes what you should be visualizing at that moment. This is why you need someone to explain it to you line by line. You should visualize what each line is instructing you to visualize from the beginning of that line. From line to line the visualization develops...

Find a community that doesn't have such a questionable lineage. And I'm not just talking about the failure of ethics. Sangharakshita's connection to a legitimate lineage was always questionable.

Re: Shamatha and Vipasyana in Ngondro
So, how do I actually practise ngondro from a technical standpoint? Do I just do it? Yes, you just do it. Rongzom Pandita said: In general, secret mantra is proclaimed to be the four doors: the door of reciting words is the recollection of the ultimate; the door of secret mantra is invoking the key...

That is not a shortnened form of the LN ngondro. It is a completely separate, extremely short ngondro. It was revealed as a mind treasure by Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche at the request of Jetsun Pema Chodzin Sangngag Wangmo Rinpoche, Mr. Kazi's daughter, the Tulku of the famous Jetsun Shugseb. She asked ...

Re: What do you call this Longchen Nyingtik text that I have?
The short LN ngondro wasn't written for Westerners, it was written by Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. Anyway, most Westerners doing their first LN Ngondro do the long one: https://www.lotsawahouse.org/tibetan-masters/dodrupchen-I/longchen-nyingtik /magnus I am pretty sure there are other Lamas who have cr...

Re: The Future of American Buddhism
What did Buddha say to rely on? He said one should not take his word for anything, but to test his teachings the same way a goldsmith tests gold to make sure it is not pyrite, etc. Then rebirth for you is a faith. So the reliable witnesses bit comes from whom? Vasubandhu? I like using the analogy o...

Yeah it looks like it hasn't been translated yet by 84000.co Everything you really need to know about Mahāyāna is in the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras and their commentaries. This is the class of sutras, according to Sakya Paṇḍita, the Buddha spent the most time teaching (ten years), out of his 45 year lon...

Re: The Future of American Buddhism
It blows my mind that people still try to obfuscate this issue. Every tradition of Buddhism from any country that has ever existed has taught rebirth and karma, not to mention what the Buddha said on the topic. It is one thing to approach the dharma with curiosity and an attempt to learn without imm...

Re: Tradition for Solitary Practitioner?
I tend to go along with the majority opinion that teachers and Sanghas are pretty crucial for most traditions. But technically Buddha recognized the validity of the Pratyekabuddhayāna as a path to liberation. Of course there is very little practical or specific indications about what that type of s...

Re: Tradition for Solitary Practitioner?
I'll echo what Lama Pema said about the importance of group practice for recognizing and working with your kleshas, as well as simply learning the practice. All of the drums, bells, melodies and mudras are far easier to learn in a group. But at the same time I don't think that has to preclude you fr...

Re: Can I use my breath in place of Amitabha's name during nianfo?
Frankly I think it would defeat the purpose. As Khonchok Thrinley said, it would be better to just link the recitation with the breath. This is a traditional way of combining the two, and instructions can be found in Taming the Monkey Mind
