Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

Let me rephrase - one cannot fully appreciate or understand no-self, no-permanence, that dukkha must arise from attachment to the conditioned, unless one can quiet the mind/heart to the extent that emptiness becomes paramount, whats being called vipassana, insight into the true nature, is entirely ...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

Why was it that the first time ''a light was turned on in me", was after reading J.Krishnamurti, who was not a Buddhist and did not talk about Buddhism? If ultimately his books didn't reflect the four dharma seals what kind of light was it then, in retrospect? The question was rhetorical. Of c...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

Right? after he finally ate some food, he didn't start practicing vipassana! he remembered the jhana of his youth and then achieved awakening. I can see where this will venture into speculation about a host of things. Gotama was not an ordinary person unendowed with wisdom. There must have been a t...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

I didn't hear the Dharma until I went to hear Sakya Trizin teach the Dharma in 1989. After that experience, I understood the necessity of hearing the Dharma. Hearing Dharma from a qualified lama/teacher is the decisive turning point. It is like the teacher turns a light on. Kirt Why was it that the...

Re: "Believe nothing unless..." quote

How can you talk/discuss about something that was never said? Is Malcolm the only one who gets it? As I said, it's a bad paraphrase, but it appears to be based off of the Kalama Sutta, which is a discourse of the Buddha, from Pali Canon. There is a Mahayana Sutra equivalent: https://suttacentral.ne...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

But if you look directly at the Pali discourses — the earliest extant sources for our knowledge of the Buddha's teachings — you'll find that although they do use the word samatha to mean tranquillity, and vipassana to mean clear-seeing, they otherwise confirm none of the received wisdom about these...

Re: Has the Heart Sutra Been Finally Proven as Chinese Apocrypha?

That whole article reeks of "Mahayana got it wrong". In fact, if it wasn't for the context of this discussion, this reference probably wouldn't be allowed on the forum outside of Open Dharma. "I structure my argument around a close reading of the Kaccānagotta Sutta (S ii.16), a short...

Re: Has the Heart Sutra Been Finally Proven as Chinese Apocrypha?

Now that Jayarava has been thoroughly trashed, I would suggest reading this paper on paticcasamupadda, dependent origination. He seems quite clear, after reading half of it. Perhaps he descends into a deep, dark, hole of fabrication in the 2nd half?

Also how do you reconcile the 'extinction of perception' with the eightfold path? or the buddha's own awakening? Please quote where I said the "extinction of perception?" I cannot find this statement. Isn't that the english for "Nirodha Samapatti"? The stopping of existence, or ...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

I believe the Vimuttimagga is not one of the disputed commentaries. I'm not sure why. Doesn't that site talk about it? There are probably other sites that also talk about this. You didn't think that the arguments made on puredhamma were valid? The arguments hinge upon the idea that Buddhaghosa intr...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

Oh, man... You assume that you found in the canon what the monks did not notice for 2000 years... Ok. )) What? Its actually that your claim (which follows abhidhamma and the commentaries) is not found in the suttas. Your finding something in the canon that isn't there. One cannot become a saint apa...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

the real goal in Buddhist teachings is to ''see things the way they actually are". Please show me that in any early text. I'll be surprised if it's even in the digha-nikaya SA301: “Why is this? One who rightly sees and knows, as it really is , the arising of the world, does not hold to the non...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

There are several Sri Lankan monks who don't agree with Visuddhimagga and Buddhaghosa. This is a view that seems to be growing. I've read that Buddhaghosa was a Vedic scholar who was 'hired' to translate into Pali, a language that has different meanings for similar words for Sanskrit. You can read ...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

The jhānas and the mundane types of direct knowledge by themselves do not issue in enlightenment and liberation. Really? Because if you read the Buddhas own account of his awakening, it paints a different picture: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.036.than.html the real goal in Buddhis...

Re: NOT another Jhana Thread

I agree that trying to compare Shikantaza to the 4th jhana is somewhat dubious at best. But, keep in mind that Abhidhamma is hotly disputed within Theravada circles. Many dispute the Visuddhimagga claiming its author, Buddhaghosa, bit off more than he could chew. Sticking to the suttas for instruct...

Re: Vipasyana Meditation

Wrong kind of vipaśyanā. The kind of vipaśyanā proper to Māhayāna is referred to in the Akṣayamati-nirdeśa : "The consciousness that perceives the entry into reality is called "vipaśyanā." So-called vipaśyanā is perceiving phenomena correctly, perceiving phenomena as they are, percei...
