Re: Emptiness disorientation

Thanks for the advice anjali :anjali: I don't have a teacher, but I hear you that it would be a good idea. I'm thinking about finding one but I don't want to jump into anything. Seated meditation is half lotus or full lotus for me; I don't have any problem with flexibility in my legs, just a small s...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

I have a followup question. I have mild scoliosis so seated meditation is difficult for me. Will I need to get that treated before I can really meditate properly? How important is precise posture in meditation?

Re: Emptiness nutshells

I like what I interpret as your dualism (dual dependent origination), but have been in enough of these discussions to anticipate the unexpected - Are you referring to physical phenomena, or do you feel there are mental phenomena that are permanently inaccessible to mind? I'm not fussed as to whethe...

Re: Emptiness nutshells

How does this relate to emptiness? It relates to emptiness in that everything is dependently originated, including your idea of dependent origination, including the specific application of the notion of dependent origination to a particular object or mental phenomenon - that idea and application is...

Re: Emptiness nutshells

Things aren't even what they ARE, much less what they seem. Not sure if someone said this one already, but it's basically true. Things aren't any particular way, so they certainly aren't what anyone says they "are". I suspect that's pushing things too far Up to a point , I can be defined ...

Two copies! :thanks:
I think digital copies are more convenient (especially the search features), but there's something very aesthetically pleasing about holding a real paper book.

Re: Emptiness disorientation

Some hang themselves up or leap into the void, Or eat bad food or swallow deadly poison, Or by their evil conduct Bring destruction on themselves. This is generally my approach, and most of my anger comes from seeing cowards who are unwilling to do even this much interfere with true spiritual maste...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

Reading up on how shamatha can allow more genuine vipashyana to arise might be apt. Thrangu Rinpoche has a lot of material on this. As you said, it's good to dedicate time with no conceptual analysis so this may aswell be shamatha practice. Thank you for this advice. I actually have a lot of proble...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

Thank you everybody for your advice and words of encouragement. Due to your comments I've realized that ever since I started thinking about these subjects, they have seemed so important and compelling and endless that there have barely been any moments when my thoughts haven't been spinning trying t...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

To the OP: Thank you, I think this is the post so far that most accurately describes the precise problem I'm getting at. I certainly haven't stopped grasping anything; I'm a long way from that. I'm kind of starting to figure the real issue for me may just be the interaction of encountering exciting...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

The wordy nature of your OP says something - which is that you're thinking about thinking which easily morphs into a tendency called 'prapanca' meaning 'conceptual proliferation'. Emptiness is simply a mode of perception, as per this brief essay http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

When your mind is full of thoughts as you describe, it is necessary to settle the mind first in order to develop some clarity. The traditional technique for this is meditation, in which you sit, breathe, and observe thoughts as they arise and cease. Pay no attention to the content of the thoughts, ...

Re: Emptiness disorientation

Why would it be disorienting to see the conditioned nature of objects? I would expect it to be ... (WTF is the opposite of disorienting) since it would do away with false expectations and so would reduce the possibility of being "startled" or "caught by surprise" when sh*t falls...

Emptiness disorientation

Hi all, I'm new here. I've been doing some Buddhist practice on my own for a few years, but I'm not a committed Buddhist. This looks like a forum with many great members with a lot of wisdom to share, so I thought I'd try asking for a bit of advice. I hope this is an interesting question for others ...
