Re: Does anyone here practice won buddhism?
In South Korea, Won Buddhism is not registered as sect of Korean Buddhism, but an independent religion, influenced by Buddhism, Confucian, Taoist and Cheondoism. Won Buddhism was not founded by any member of the Sangha (Bhikku, Bhikkuni, Upasaka, Upasika) but a man named Park Jongbin Daejongsa, his ...

Wrist mala too big for wear and practice?
There are two wrist malas I use for practice and wear (I don't use 108 ones). The first one, Nepalese Bodhiseed wrist mala is one of my favorite mala (has a nice touch to it) for breath focus and mantras but it seems too large to wear, since I don't prefer my mala to be very visible to other people....

Re: How should I deal with these insults to Buddhism?
If that evangelist were your mother or dear friend, what would you do to help them? This is a serious question, not a rhetorical one. My mother is a protestant but she respects my beliefs, she even tries to learn about the Dharma from me. Well, she is not very serious about her religion as she goes...

Re: How should I deal with these insults to Buddhism?
What should I do? Stop thinking that Buddhism needs to be defended from insults? Let them think what they want to think and let that be the end of it. For example, if they say "You should not follow such teachings, buddhism is evil!" then say "Ok, thank you for your concern". Th...

Re: How should I deal with these insults to Buddhism?
Are they family members? If not, yes just ignore them. Those people in that video are a cult, stay away from them. They operate nation-wide, in subways, on streets, parks everywhere. It becomes quite difficult to ignore them when I have to face them every day. Usually I hide my wrist-mala when I en...

Re: How should I deal with these insults to Buddhism?
South Korea's religious situation is interesting because Catholics in Korea are generally passive and friendly with Buddhism but Protestantism has been hostile on Buddhism, Catholicism, Won Buddhism, Confucianism etc (They even protested against the S.Korean gov to boycott Confucian rituals), Protes...

Re: Any Mantras when facing harmful spirits and trying to enlighten them through the mantra?
If a spirit is harmful it is unlikely that they will want to take you as a teacher, so how do you expect to guide them towards enlightenment. Saying the Vajra Guru mantra will protect you though. Saying the six syllable mantra may calm them. [/quote] Haha unfortunately I am not an enlightened sentie...

Re: Buddha as a god
Many from Mahayana tradition here in Korea views Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Amitabha Buddha, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva as deities who bestows good fortune, good luck and longevity. However, I see those Bodhisattva's and Buddha's as a manifestation ourselves, so we could be like them. And those deity...

Hyongak Sunim fed up with Korean Seon
http://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_entertainment/755201.html I think Venerable Hyongak made a very good decision. Do we need to go through certain ritual to become an Upasaka (Laity)?
Is there a need to go through a process similar to that of 'Baptism' to become an Upasaka or Upasika? If a person do not go through such process is this person not a Buddhist yet? I was born in a family with a Mahayana Zen Paternal side and Protestant Maternal side but I am not sure if practicing th...

Re: Traveling to Buddhist Countries
Come to South Korea. Korea has a long history of being a Buddhist nation. South Korea is one of the safest nations in asia to travel. Notably, Korea has something called Tripitaka Koreana (Palman Daejanggyeong), collection of the Tripitaka carved onto 81,258 wooden printing blocks in the 13th centur...
