Re: The Writings of Nichiren

My take on it is that such ideas were open to being misunderstood and misinterpreted - both by his followers and his enemies. Back then communication and flow of information was a lot more restricted. Sharing such ideas without fully understanding risked doing more harm than good. And from the writi...

Re: Where to purchase Butsugu accessories.

A lot of the NS stuff that the soka gakkai used to sell back in the day was either cheap plastic or gaudy brass and was branded in its own way. I must admit I never really cared much for it. I've always used hand made butsugu where possible/practical. Recently, after my water cup developed a crack I...

Re: Any independent Nichiren Buddhists here?

He calls that everyone. Don't worry. :D It's his way of saying it does not have to be as it seems, but it might. Even his own students. I did wonder if something like that might be the case. Especially as I myself don't like the term 'buddhist' at all. It just puts people into a little box. Unfortu...

Re: Any independent Nichiren Buddhists here?

Not a nichiren buddhist, but my guess would be lotus sutra and nichiren's own writing? There is a really nice translation of lotus sutra at 84000 project. I didn't get as far as reading the translation but this caught my eye in the introduction by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche: The Japanese ch...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

I get the gist of what Minobu is saying here and I'm largely in agreement. I know it was always argued that one of Ikeda's roles was to schmooze the rich and powerful but it just came across as a bit needy to me. And buying up chateaux (don't forget Taplow Court in the UK) amongst other major proper...

Re: Why do we have to do continuous daimoku?

Hmm - I looked but couldn't find it. If anything, Niwano did not believe in the merits of chanting too much daimoku because the mind will start to wander. He seems to have been a 'little but often' kind of guy.

I pretty sure I've read that quote in an article by Niwano - but i'm not sure of it's ultimate provenance.

Re: Sanskrit Daimoku

Thanks for that detailed reply Coemgemu. I was wondering whether the modern mandarin had any more than a passing resemblance to the classic chinese pronunciation. And it is interesting to see how the pronunciation differs between modern and middle japanese. Kyo and ching/jing seem so far apart now, ...

How would one practice Shinto outside of religious structure in Japan? (Assuming you're not living in Japan) Wouldn't one have to train with Shinto Priests?
This would seem to be one of the starting points: https://www.reddit.com/r/Shinto/

Re: How do we respond to people who discredit Nichiren Buddhism?

I'm trying to figure out how to respond to their objections. Like, why should I believe that the Lotus Sutra is the teachings of the Buddha? As Miroku indicated there has long been discussion within buddhism as to the correctness of different parts of the canon (to put it delicately.) What is undis...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

The antecedents of workshop folks are obscure though. Despite the fact that no one is quite sure just who they are, they don't come across as sectarian to me. Overall, I trust them. I think my main criticism of the NMSW is that their site(s) are badly organised. There are two main sites, and it is ...

Re: Why didn't the Daimoku save Nichiren from illness?

How do we know that it didn't? He may well have already prolonged his life by overcoming illness but just didn't write about it much. He certainly prolonged his life in the face of great persecution. I've never had the feeling that if only he had lived a bit longer he could have completed his missio...

Re: Gongyo in Japanese (not shindoku/onyomi)?

Reciting sutras in shindoku is comparable to Latin Mass in a Catholic Church. I took Latin in grade school. I have a feeling my teacher was not pronouncing Latin in any form that an ancient Roman would. He was pronouncing it like a New Yorker. I can't imagine that some of those Latin portions of ma...

Re: why i stopped a daily Nichirenesque practice

I've been in SGI for almost 2 years and it's been very beneficial to me. I've also read most of this forum and have learned a lot from you all. I was a little surprised and very curious about the admissions of QQ, Minobu and Narwhal that they do other practices. It is probably worth bearing in mind...

The French Nichiren Buddhists also have amazing resources, and French is close enough to English that GoogleTranslate handles it with minimal scrambling. I presume this is one site you must be referring to: https://www.nichiren-etudes.net/ Although much of the material has been translated from engl...

Re: What's the best book on Nichiren Buddhism you can recommend?

What about the Yampolsky edited volume of Nichiren Letters? Any good? Or the Burton Watson Selected Letters? Aren't they the same thing? At least, the Yampolsky edited volume is just a small collection of Watson's translations of the gosho that he did for the SGI. It is not a book on Nichiren Buddh...

Re: What's the best book on Nichiren Buddhism you can recommend?

I've never read it, and it's long out of print (so probably a bit outdated), but I've heard good things about Daniel Montgomery's Fire in the Lotus. Yes, it is an excellent book. Much better than I thought it would be for a cheap paperback. It gives a good explanation of how mahayana developed into...
