Re: Gongyo in Japanese (not shindoku/onyomi)?

Reciting sutras in shindoku is comparable to Latin Mass in a Catholic Church. I took Latin in grade school. I have a feeling my teacher was not pronouncing Latin in any form that an ancient Roman would. He was pronouncing it like a New Yorker. I can't imagine that some of those Latin portions of ma...

Re: why i stopped a daily Nichirenesque practice

I've been in SGI for almost 2 years and it's been very beneficial to me. I've also read most of this forum and have learned a lot from you all. I was a little surprised and very curious about the admissions of QQ, Minobu and Narwhal that they do other practices. It is probably worth bearing in mind...

Re: why i stopped a daily Nichirenesque practice

The French Nichiren Buddhists also have amazing resources, and French is close enough to English that GoogleTranslate handles it with minimal scrambling. I presume this is one site you must be referring to: https://www.nichiren-etudes.net/ Although much of the material has been translated from engl...

Re: What's the best book on Nichiren Buddhism you can recommend?

What about the Yampolsky edited volume of Nichiren Letters? Any good? Or the Burton Watson Selected Letters? Aren't they the same thing? At least, the Yampolsky edited volume is just a small collection of Watson's translations of the gosho that he did for the SGI. It is not a book on Nichiren Buddh...

Re: What's the best book on Nichiren Buddhism you can recommend?

I've never read it, and it's long out of print (so probably a bit outdated), but I've heard good things about Daniel Montgomery's Fire in the Lotus. Yes, it is an excellent book. Much better than I thought it would be for a cheap paperback. It gives a good explanation of how mahayana developed into...

Re: Opinions on this BBC documentary?

Probably the strangest thing about this documentary is when the woman is asked her if she felt Ikeda was a spiritual man. She responds, “He seemed to be the least spiritual person I have ever met.” How exactly do you qualify that? How do you … “seem spiritual”? If any one needs help on how to seem ...

Re: Reading more widely

Try this: https://www.urbandharma.org/udharma14/budtea.html]The Buddha and His Teachings It gives a good outline of the fundamentals of Buddhism from the Theravada perspective, which is where it all started really. It is also available in paperback from Amazon. (Worth it, imo, if you can get a copy....

Re: Opinions on this BBC documentary?

I'm not surprised by the Polly Toynbee segment, given that she was a former vice-president of the British Humanist Association (now called Humanists UK) - which aims to "...work to enhance the public understanding and appreciation of secularism as the best strategy for achieving freedom, equality, ...

Re: Why doesn’t Ikeda inscribe his own gohonzon?

According to the doctrines of Nichiren Shoshu, the Daishonin is the calligraphic embodiment of the Nichiren Shoshu Gohonzon that is legitimately transcribed by each and every successive High Priest of the Head Temple I presume you meant to say: "According to the doctrines of Nichiren Shoshu, the Ni...

Re: Nichiren as Honbutsu

Well, that would depend on who you ask. If you ask Nichiren Shoshu or SGI they would say yes. Actually I'm not sure they would say yes. Ultimately their argument is that if Shakyamuni attained enlightenment in the distant past then he must have had a teacher, and that teacher must be the original (...

Nichiren actually proscribed even circumambulating and prostrations.
Interesting. Do you have a link for that?

Or is there also a Honmon Butsuryo Shu?

Do you have a link to the site you were looking at?

Re: Yampolsky's Selected Writings of Nichiren

You should be alright then. I don't think anyone has every considered Watson comprised because of his work for the soka gakkai. But he was never credited as the sole translator. I believe he did the heavy lifting and then an editorial committed tidied things up for the NSIC translations. (The seven ...

Re: Yampolsky's Selected Writings of Nichiren

I believe the translations are largely the work of Burton Watson so I wouldn't expect anything hugely different to the official SGI/NSIC translations. That said, maybe there are subtle differences? It is highly probable that the Watson translations would have been tweaked slightly to support NS orth...

Re: Do Nichiren Buddhists believe in God?

the creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority; the supreme being. It is interesting that you have taken what I would call a very simplistic and fundamentalist definition of god. To me it conjures up the stern wrathful god of the old testament. I have met some Christian thi...

It is not easy to get all the various buddhist schools to agree with one another, but this is one such subject.

Thanks for posting that - it was an interesting read. I've read a bit about this guy before, but there was also a lot there that was new to me. And to my great shame, back when I lived in London I never visited the peace pagoda they constructed. This was pre-schism,and contact with other Nichiren se...

Re: What did Nichiren think of Confucianism and Shintoism?

Two observations... Confucianism certainly prompts much thought. One of the challenges is to separate the underlying principles rather than blindly following rules that applied to a different period and culture. In many ways our society today can seem to have lost its bearings and confucianism can p...

although it is about homage to the sun in general. There is no reference to the time of day.
