Re: Strategies for Keeping Practice in the West

Best strategy ever: give up samsara, gather cash, go on 3 years retreat near u (if possible), learn a lot before (language, rituals, tormas, mandalas, philosophy, texts), meditate a lot, achieve realisation, start teaching. Whats the point of practicing if we still hunt for the moon reflected in the...

Re: Charging for Dharma

In centre im often visiting, there are shorter and longer retreats and each of them having suggested dana for participating (which reflects accomodation/staff/materials costs). Main Lama here always says that he would love to live in times, where dana is natural and everyone understands that if we w...

Re: Importance of Secrecy in Secret Mantra

If secrecy is broken, begginers and nonbuddhists can get acces to stuff they dont understand, then they can start looking for explanations within internet and most likely make their confusion even bigger. Simple topic - emptiness. Or meaning of men and rakta. Or feasts in chod. Or many many other th...

Re: Dreams, good signs

Its the sign of u thinking about sky with some buddhas, dakins, jidams, so then your mind repeating it while dreaming; quite similar to the effect of the white bear (try not to think about white bear now). Common psychological stuff :) And like my teacher would probably say - dont get attached, prac...

Re: Taking Empowerment as a Blessing

An empowerment is extremely powerful purification and merit accumulation, and has many other benefits that are described in books. It is not just a matter of gaining permission to practice a specific practice. Even getting the same empowerment from the same lama every day for years in a row would s...

Re: Refuge in the Guru

This is a minefield. Usually the way this thread goes is that everyone posts their own experience, or what's considered a definitive opinion from their school on what constitutes a root Lama. As this is a very important question to grapple with, I would suggest 1) ask any teachers or other authorit...

Re: Taking Empowerment as a Blessing

I have asked my teacher once - considering all dieties are same, is there a reason to recive many abishekas. He answered, that from personal practice perspective it has no reason at all. One guru yoga, one yidam and one dharmapala is all that we need. But if i want to become a teacher one day in thi...

Re: Is Katha Unorthodox?

I was just recently trying out kathas as an aftermath for the practice(like how one prays to protectors after completing a sadhana), especially protective paritta chants. So I recited a paritta chant used by monks since Theravada doesn't have any form of empowerment and followed what the Dhammawhee...

Re: Emanation Confusion

So I've been trying to understand emanations and incarnations, but an having hard times understanding this. Is an emanation if a deity still the deity itself? Or is it the deity' s child/whatever it Is? Saraswati is an emanations of Tara. Does that mean they are the same being? The 21 Taras are ema...

Re: Blessing Images?

I have found this: http://www.thangkapaintings.com/thankapaintingprocess.php seems like the process is even more complicated than i have initialy thought. And about images inspired by Dharma - i do agree that noone needs anyoones permition to make them. But to use them as an object of practice is a ...

Is it also worthless becouse of mental afflictions? My teacher use to say, that even if we wont achieve the fruit of the path, we are ...

Re: Blessing Images?

Thangka is something more than painting and comes from deep understanding of religion, symbolism, proportions, angles, lines, colours, shapes, positions, every single piece painted or used have its meaning. As i understand the process its not the bless that makes thangka, its every single moment of ...

Re: Turn daily life into Dharma

Well, how do you keep your practice up without a community? I can walk around thinking positive thoughts about everyone, saying mantras during the day etc. But without the possibility of shared frame of reference with the people around you - it's all in your head. No one will ever know. I've starte...

Re: Turn daily life into Dharma

Its very simple imo ;). Train in paramitas , practice bodhicitta - work with compassion and love, meditate (formal practice and in between sessions), train in pure perception, dont hurt anyone (that means you as well), use every single opportunity to practice Dharma - the four foundations should be ...

Re: What do 'emanation of' means according to vajrayana?

I have found great comparison on the trikaya idea: If we were to compare Dharmakaya to vapor, Sambhogakaya to clouds, then Nirmanakaya to rain. And HE Tais Situpa saying: "dharmakaya, sambhogakaya, and nirmanakaya are not separate from each other. They are just three different aspects of the state o...

Re: What is the purpose of chanting?

For some its more profound in english (becouse of easy understanding the meaning), for others its more profound in tibetan. I love tibetan mellody and how the language sounds, for some reason (i guess karmic) its easy for me to remember tibetan sutras and then to follow them with understanding the m...

Re: What do 'emanation of' means according to vajrayana?

སྤྲུལ - sprul, thats my guess for a word (as ive done some research in wylie) seems like emanation/manifestation is the easiest term to understand of its meaning.

Re: "Forgiveness Is Not Buddhist" Article by McLeod in Tricycle

Interesting article, setupped hardly within dualistic point of view, not showing another part of the buddhist practice (and i guess its done by purpose). As long as we will operate within self-other space, every conclusion about forgiveness, suffering, harm (between 2 or more beeings) will have self...
