Re: Buddhist Memes Thread

I don't like samsara, it's course and rough, and irritating. And it gets everywhere. :jedi:

Re: Well Known Thai meditation monk confirms existence of Amitabha's Pure Land.

I do know that such practices did make their way to Theravadan countries. For example, Hevajra was practiced in at least Cambodia and Thailand, and remains from Hevajra statues have been recovered in Cambodia, but I want to know if these practices continue to this day. The so-called "tantric" Thera...

Re: Memory Recall

Ask your teacher.
Theravadins have practices to purposefully bring up memories of past lives. Not exactly relevant though if you're practicing Zazen.
I have had random memories during meditation, but as SteRo advises, I ignored them and continued with my practice.

Vata pacifying diet while practicing Pranayama?

I remembered recently that Swami Rama in his books on Pranayama would heavily recommend that anyone who was engaging in extensive Pranayama practice should have a sattvic diet consisting of lots of ghee, milk, etc. (i.e. a vata pacifying diet). At the time I did not realize that this was a vata paci...

Ways of Enlightenment from Dharma Publishing, it's a summary of Ju Mipham's Gateway to Knowledge. Far easier to read and digest than the original.

Re: What are the most minimalist or simplest forms or schools of Buddhism?

Buddhism in it's entirety: 1) Meditate 2) Be good You can reach enlightenment without knowing anything, just by meditating. It is helpful to learn some of the major concepts but you need none of it. If this were true every Hindu ascetic that ever lived would be a Buddha right now. Buddhism wouldn't...

There are Nyingmapas who mainly focus mahayoga and anuyoga. But the goal of all is Dzogchen, even if they are not practicing Dzogchen directly.
Interesting, thank you!

Would you buy a car without a steering wheel and engine?
I wouldn't. But I think it's more comparable to having the causes to buy a honda civic as opposed to buying a ferrari. Not everyone has the causes to buy a ferrari.

Nyingmapas who don't practice Dzogchen?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if there are Nyingmapas who only practice HYT without Dzogchen? Or is the general consensus that if you have the karma to meet a Nyingmapa lama you probably have the superior capacity for Dzogchen?

common people = westerners (who have a culture of a deep belief in a soul)

Ah. I got confused because I read the full article and it mentioned how some Tibetans and Himalayans do make such a distinction.

Re: Does the Bön tradition believe we have a self/soul?

This is because among common people, there is an ambiguity between bla and consciousness. I assume by common people you mean Tibetan/Himalayan folk beliefs, right? I thought it was sort of like the fantasy concept of a "shade". A lingering bit of the person that acts like them, but isn't really "th...

But the elements disperse at death etc and are just part of your conditioned existence.
The bLa lingers after death and acts like a sentient spirit AFAIK.

Then there is the LUG phenomena, i.e., lesbian until graduation.
This is honestly the first time I've heard this phrase, I've heard the idea expressed before but not often.
Maybe this is a generational difference?

Re: LN Ngondro requirements

The reason why Sakyapas insist on empowerment first is that 1) it has to with the Sakyapa theory, articulated by Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen, that there are two approaches to entering secret mantra: a gradual one for less fortunate students, which is consistent with the Kadampa/Kagyu/Gelug graduated app...

Yes, I know there are different opinion on this subject and we discussed it before. But as you say this is the way it is done these day in the Kagyu and Nyingma. I personally feel like there is a missing link between being a beginner in Vajrayana and then instantly starting with Ngondro. /magnus Sa...

Re: Karmic cause become gay

It's become a joke among people of my generation (I'm in my 20s) that many women my age are bisexual. While it's obviously not objective, the fact that the joke has caught on like wildfire suggests something I think. Human sexuality is not fully understood, and I think homosexuality is underreported...

A master (Atisha?) once said that Tibetans problem was that they were practicing too many Yidams at once, where as Indians stuck to one Yidam their whole lives.

Speaking of webcast empowerments - or perhaps webcasts of empowerments? - "There will be live webcasts of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's two day Avalokiteshvara Empowerment from his residence in Dharamsala, HP, India on May 30-31, 2020". This is an interesting point in the discussion, because initia...
