Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

You don't have to be born as a human, specifically as a human male to reach liberation. In order to attain buddhahood, one must be born a human being with eight freedoms and ten endowments. One cannot attain buddhahood if one is born in any other condition— hell being, preta, animal, asura, or deva...

Re: New To Buddhism

You really don't need to worry about sectarianism: I was introduced to Pure Land by a Jodo Shu monk, attended a Jodo Shinshu temple, practiced Pure Land with Tendai, attended a Fo Guang Shan temple and it was all fine! No one ever said a bad word about another group. I personally prefer a mult-pract...

Please support your assertions with scholarship. I also recommend Buddhism in China: A Historical Survey , an essay available in Antonio Cua's compilation Encyclopedia of Chinese Philosophy . Around 400, the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu built on other, later Mahayana sutras, and founded Yogacara,...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

Slow and laborious like a horse and buggy (your Buddhism). Quick and svelt like a Concorde jet (the Lotus Sutra Buddhism of Nichiren). Puffery is found in all lineages. All over East Asia it's accepted that Kannon can preach the Dharma to hungry ghosts taking the form of a hungry ghost, or as an an...

Re: can we surely born in Pureland?

is this enough? I know probably not It's more than enough. You can surely be born there. The only hindrance would be your doubt, and even then it would only restrict one to birth from the womb on the borderlands, unable to see that Buddha, hear the Dharma, make offerings, or acquire merit. Sure it'...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

I have to say I find this conversation of Malcolm's interesting as he excorciated Coemgemu for writing a limerick and now comes here to destroy believers' faith in the Lotus Sutra, talk about slandering the Dharma and creating terrible karma! DGA: Where has Malcolm done this, at all, in this thread...

Re: Source of Indra's Net?

Unfortunately, I have done far worse in my life already than slandering the Buddhadharma. There is nothing worse than slandering Buddhadharma. Slandering Buddhadharma is like killing your parents, etc. Oh please he wrote a limerick, give it a rest Malcolm! Slandering the Buddhadharma would be like ...

Re: Western Gyo, Eastern Gyo in Tendai

I should add, this is due to a general unease of "commitment", which I would only imagine would be problematized by "samaya", rather than an "opposition" to tantra or esotericism in general. I am similarly disinteresting in being a "priest", for personal reasons. I am very interesting in learning, ...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

You certainly can practice mainstream Pure Land without a master, many have. You simply need to have faith and to chant Amida's name. It became famous for just that reason. And remember viz; 'hearing the sutra' how many people back in those days were literate and had rare and expensive copies of the...

Easy do what I'm doing: eat a Celebration Vegan roast. Then I plan to go to my altar, burn incense chant Amida's name: nembutsu, and transfer the merit to the poor turkeys to be reborn in Amida's Pure Land.

Queequeg:To assert that the nature of mind is distinct from reading books, that the sutra is exclusive of the letters which make it up... isn't that a rather limited view? To assert that the sutra does not transcend the letters would be wrong, but to assert that reality is exclusive of the written ...

This isn't Genshin, but seems the best place to post and as it relates to Genshin's esoteric Pure Land . An M.A. thesis focusing on the Shingon priest Kakuban's esoteric Pure Land practice has been published and is freely downloadable. https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitstream/10125/27696/1/Mo...
