Re: Turkey practices?

Easy do what I'm doing: eat a Celebration Vegan roast. Then I plan to go to my altar, burn incense chant Amida's name: nembutsu, and transfer the merit to the poor turkeys to be reborn in Amida's Pure Land.

Queequeg:To assert that the nature of mind is distinct from reading books, that the sutra is exclusive of the letters which make it up... isn't that a rather limited view? To assert that the sutra does not transcend the letters would be wrong, but to assert that reality is exclusive of the written ...

Re: New book about Genshin's Ōjōyōshū

This isn't Genshin, but seems the best place to post and as it relates to Genshin's esoteric Pure Land . An M.A. thesis focusing on the Shingon priest Kakuban's esoteric Pure Land practice has been published and is freely downloadable. https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitstream/10125/27696/1/Mo...

I've never really read commentaries on any of the Three Pure Land Sutras. Does anyone have any favorites or recommendations? Thanks so much  Sadly there isn't much translated. Here is the one I read ages ago, Master Ou-I's commentary http://www.ymba.org/books/mind-seal-buddhas/introduction/m...

DGA: No, the topic of this discussion is "Lotus Sutra: Buddha Prabhutaratna." Not Hua Yen thought, nor the Avatamsaka Sutra. Will your post address the topic of the appearance of Buddha Prabhutaratna in the Lotus Sutra? I'm curious to find out. I did. Since time isn't linear both Buddhas can appear....

Re: Meditation in Tendai

with regard to the Pure Land, Tendai would view it through the understanding of Tendai philosophy, meaning: the Truth of the Middle So the Pure Land is provisionally real and at the same time empty. And here is the great Tendai Pure Land Master Genshin with his esoteric meditation on Amida, saying j...

Re: Buddhism and Lust, is it ok, not ok, kind of ok?

I actually agree that it is mostly a problem of misogyny, and very little to do with "lust" or sex. Talk about MALE sexual abuse and what you as MEN can do to positively change the culture, otherwise this conversation is ridiculous gassho Yeah, I'll just grab my Male(tm) remote control and change t...

Re: Buddhism and Lust, is it ok, not ok, kind of ok?

Not sure how "lust" is really the issue in teacher sex scandals...taking that as the issue strikes me as superficial int he extreme. Let's get real and name the problem: powerful men abuse their position to solicit/force/coerce/rape/ sex with women It's a question of power: male power. Alpha males ...

Re: Tendai and Gelugpa - from Nichiren and Tantra

The two truths are inseparable, no matter which way they are parsed. Yeah, sorry, we're not on the same page. We are talking about different things. Not really. Things can only be perceived in two wsys, as they seem or as they are. There is no third alternative. Tiantai/Tendai is simple: All phenom...

On a separate note, Asheville is a lovely town and the environment there is excellent for Dharma pra...

How does, Tibetan Yogacarya and Madhamakya deal with this? I'm so interested in these issues and really enjoy learning! gassho Rory I don't think they have jellyfish in Tibet. There are amazing ones in the Caspian, unless Tibet drifted off from Central Asia. So what is your opinion from either Yogc...

Re: Are Jellyfish Enlightened?

No, they are not enlightened. They possess Tathagatagarbha like all sentient beings, but they are not enlightened. Brainless? Yes. Enlightened? No. Since jellyfish have buddhanature, they are able to become enlightened. I posted from the Lotus Sutra and how East Asia Buddhism regards this: Maitreya...

Re: Are Jellyfish Enlightened?

Of course a jellyfish can become enlightened, it has a buddhanature just as you do. Chapter 12 of the Lotus Sutra , Devadatta, makes this perfectly clear in the famous episode of the Dragon girl who becomes enlightened. Wisdom Accumulation Bodhisattva asked Manjushri, "Humane one, how many living be...

Re: Lotus Sutra: Buddha Prabhutaratna

Coemgemu: I think that this is the main difference between what is called "Lotus Buddhism" here and other Buddhisms. Lotus Buddhism seems to dismiss this: the notion of "no X until bhūmi 8 or higher". The entire point of Chih-I's Tiantai philosophy is the Truth of the Middle, meaning that the empty...
