Re: Boston-area teachings: Changchub Dorje's Atiyoga

So, to answer the earlier question about what text we are working with, tonight we worked with the personal Mahāmudrā instructions given to Wangdor Rinpoche by the 16th Karmapa. Lama Lena thought that might be appropriate for an audience with a large Kagyu contingent. Tomorrow night's session will b...

Re: Boston-area teachings: Changchub Dorje's Atiyoga

Excited about the teachings tomorrow evening! The live webcast will, indeed, be at the address posted by Lukeinaz above. For those who attend via webcast, you can also give dana via the Drikung Center's PayPal account. Scroll down to "General Donation," and be sure to note that the funds are for the...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Maybe but I doubt it, the stream is always on 15 minutes or more before the starting time. Also, in the program some events are in red color, so maybe none of these events will be on the webcast. Well, that's unfortunate, as all the ones I could easily attend live from my timezone are in red. Is it...

Maybe the rushen part will not be webcasted, it seems the stream is not on.
Yes, I was wondering about that. Is it possible that they will start late?

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Does anyone have advice about how to do the Nine Breathings or other breathwork when at least one nostril is blocked, e.g. due to allergies or a cold? Aside from, of course, taking a decongestant or antihistamine.

Re: Boston-area teachings: Changchub Dorje's Atiyoga

Exactly what is being transmitted? Are Changchub Dorje's termas being given? Too vague.... The language is admittedly vague. The title is what was suggested to us by Lama Lena's assistant, and we decided to go with it. While based on a particular text, I presume that the teachings will also feature...

Re: Where do I go to learn Trekcho

All of the teachers named above are good recommendations. I'll just add that some of them do free live webcast teachings via the Facebook group Webcasts Buddhist Teachings. If you tune into a few sessions on there, it might give you a feel for different teachers' approaches, and perhaps some sense o...

Re: Dharmata teachings.

I'm considering purchasing one of Anam Thubten's books, having never read any of them. As I understand it, all three of the books in prose are edited from his public talks; and then there's a book of poetry. For those who are familiar, do any of them stand out as particularly insightful? Is there a ...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

As evidenced by your assertion that Cakrasamvara is "outright plagiarism," I don't think there's any need to speak of "encountering deities." Not the whole thing. Passages have been shown to be directly lifted from Śaiva sources as an act of appropriation. This was known and admitted openly by the ...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

There is a difference between a) respecting other paths and their adherents b) studying those paths oneself (ideally from respected authorities) and c) recommending them to others as liberating. One can do A without doing B; or even A and B without C. In my case, for example, I have studied in multi...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

This is predicted on your mistaken assumption that Buddhist and nonbuddhist traditions aim to climb the same mountain — that's why kyle termed you a perennialist I was tweaking the classic "paths up the mountain" image in a somewhat subversive way, not endorsing it as it is commonly understood. The...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

That is called "perennialism." You, yourself said you believe there is a single mountain that all systems climb. False. What I said was: We're all on the same mountain, whether we know it or not. Some are climbing it, and others are circling the base. " In other words, we share a condition. Our exp...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

Fascination with tirthika tenet systems, beyond the pale of surface level interest, perishes at the bee stage. Unless it doesn't. Realization doesn't manifest in a mechanistic way according to a preset timetable that one's conceptual mind knows in advance. At what stage does fascination with rugby ...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

This analogy is a bit of a stretch It sure is! How can you learn to be uncontrived from following a recipe? A skilled cook in training will learn what works by experimenting and tasting, and build their repertoire so that they can play it by ear. They proceed on an empirical basis, observing their ...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

But what is the point of "playing with words and concepts"? Does it help in our practice of the Dharma? Yes. As someone who works with adolescents for a living, you might want to relax your rigid concept of pedagogy. Play is integral to learning. No, because the concepts in question are, as others ...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

At least there's some life in this thread, even if it keeps flowing into weird tangents. The rest of the Dzogchen forum had gone eerily quiet until a few hackles were raised. If nothing else, it's been spontaneous and at times absurd. Hopefully enjoyable. I'd say "educational," but that tends to put...

Re: Why Eastern Tibet?

Kathog, Dzogchen, Shechen, and Palyul are all in Eastern Tibet. The two Nyingma monasteries in Central Tibet are Mindrol Ling and Dorje Drak. The Geluk Hegemony in Central Tibet stifled the other three schools very heavily. In Kham there was more distance, and thus, more life for Sakya, Kagyu and N...

Re: Quote by ChNNR about Dzogchen and God - where is it from?

This is probably the reason such threads are completely meaningless. What is the point of this discussion if everyone assigns whatever meaning they want to the words? (e.g. the word 'god'). It's not as extreme as assigning whatever meaning we want. It's a matter of acquaintance with a broad yet fin...
