Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Has Rinpoche ever given the lung for any of Longchenpa's Seven Treasuries? If not, is he likely to do so in the future? I remember him mentioning that he received that transmission himself.

Gendun Chopel poetry

I thought it would be good to have a thread for poems by Gendun Chopel (1903-1951). I was looking into his work on Madhyamaka when I came across his poetry. I'm sure it's even better in the original Tibetan, but the English already does it for me. If there's a particular poem of his that speaks to y...

Re: Shamatha/shine

Shine with visual support also trains the gaze, which is huge. I've heard it said (don't remember if it was ChNN, TWR or both) that some more agitated types 6need to train shine with visual support to calm the mind enough to engage in contemplation. I followed the instructions for this, including n...

Tibetan Chant: Practical Resources & Scholarly Studies

Tibetan chant seems to be a rich, complex and understudied tradition. Can anyone recommend resources? I am interested both in practical instruction and in scholarship in Western languages that might give an overall presentation. There seem to be many translations of mantras, puja texts, or songs of ...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

It has struck me over the past few months that the Dzogchen Community really has some of the most melodious chant tunes I have come across in a Tibetan practice context. Maybe someone with a wider experience than mine could confirm, but I think they really stand out from the crowd. Some of them are ...

Re: Copying sutras using one's blood

I'm aware that there are reports of people taking this literally, and that sounds pretty metal. A bit macabre and theatrical, but who could doubt your commitment to the dharma afterwards? As for me, I'm not about to open any veins, at least not of my physical body. So, I'll take it metaphorically as...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

I'm having problems at the level of language. My immediate issue is learning the practices and figuring out how to pronounce the transcribed words. Especially since Rinpoche made a point of emphasizing correct pronunciation and tone a few times during the retreat. I learned the Song of the Vajra by...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Does anyone know which secondary practices Rinpoche will be giving lung for in the final morning session? It starts at 2am for me, but I know it is important to receive those live and want to do so if they are practices for which I haven't received empowerment yet.

Re: What is Dharmakaya?

Nobody said "is". Sure you did: Between two thoughts, there is a gap, indescridable openess revealing . Ah! Is a gap. Dharmakaya cannot be revealed by being caught up in thinking. Milarepa: “In the gap between two thoughts, thought-free wakefulness manifest unceasingly.” “All movement of thought is...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

What books or dvds should i own to correctly perform tuns and ganapuja? The Book of the Tun and the Ganapuja is the most commonly used manual, and it's what people tend to follow at group practices; I'd say get that. If you want more detailed explanations, you could supplement with Teachings on Thu...

Re: Does Tarthang Tulku teach dzogchen?

Whenever I spoke to his former students,I only heard about the karma yoga they did. They rarely saw him and he didn't teach much. He did however had them work quite a bit. Yes. When I asked whether he teaches dzogchen, I did not mean whether he can teach it or whether he likely regards it as the qu...

Re: Does Tarthang Tulku teach dzogchen?

I'd be really interested if anybody has determined how TT's rather idiosyncratic terminology lines up with more usual presentations, or if he does not intend for it to do so. For example, am I going to find out that Great Knowledge = [rigpa? yeshe? sems nyid?], Great Time = [the fourth time? timeles...

Re: Does Tarthang Tulku teach dzogchen?

Does Tarthang Tulku teach dzogchen? Does a Yeti shit in the Himalayan mountains? A yeti is a folkloric creature whose existence has not been directly confirmed. I understand that Tarthang Tulku was one of the first to bring this teaching to the West, and that he is kind of a big deal. I guess I sho...

Re: Alan Wallace DZ related Q&A

I enjoy listening to his teachings. Instead of the usual vajrayana ngöndro that culminates in guruyoga, he has people cultivate shamatha, the four close applications of mindfulness, and the four immeasurables. He says that this approach is more suitable for many people, and he cites traditional lam...

Does Tarthang Tulku teach dzogchen?

I want to read a bit of Tarthang Tulku because I am in the vicinity of his Nyingma Institute for the next month or so. The trouble is, he doesn't appear to use the traditional terminology for theory or practice, so I feel a bit lost perusing his books. Perhaps that is his intention. I would apprecia...

Re: Lying down and seeing Buddhist videos

One can meditate lying on one's back; that is among the traditional postures. The posture of mind is more important. You have to see for yourself whether you are able to pay careful attention while lying down. Traditionally, full-lotus was said to be best meditation posture, especially for long sitt...

I wonder, too. Maybe it won't be set exactly until the day before. I want to be sure to leave my schedule open, though . . .
