Re: The Great Abortion Debate

No, I am not one of these. My understanding is that only highly realized beings reincarnate; the rest of us are reborn. Those are synonyms. The difference is a highly realized being has choice and a degree of control. A normal being does not. I was told that reincarnation continues with the same mi...

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

What is this "me" that will be there to experience abortion in the next life? Well it won’t be this identity. My current identity is nothing more than a rat’s nest of misdirected situations, emotions, and perspectives/opinions. The project of this life is to untangle that rat’s nest as best I can s...

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

It takes at least eight weeks before a fetus can experience pain. Thanks. I didn’t know. With that information all I can say is, if this happens to me in the future, I hope it’s early enough in the pregnancy so that I can’t feel it. Having my body torn into pieces, like being drawn and quartered, i...

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

Saying abortion is acceptable undercuts that message. No, it does not. This is an instance where Buddhists ought to put aside what they imagine they read in books and look at facts and data. The fewer unwanted pregnancies there are the fewer abortions there will be. That’s a fact. Yep, that's a fac...

Re: Quitting alcohol. Dharmic advice?

When I was in my prime meditating I would sit around 23 minutes, but now I'm sort of starting from scratch, meditating shorter amounts of time with the goal of reforming a habit... Oh yeah, we've all been there. That's why we call it practice. Fall down seven times, get up eight. You can d...

Re: The Great Abortion Debate

isn't championing women's rights in opposition to the right to respect life even on a cellular level the same as the converse? ... In short, restricting women's access to safe abortions is both short-sighted and lacking in compassion. ^This. I get the impression that some men who oppose abortion on...

I suspect most of the participants in the thread are men... just sayin.
Yes, I've often wondered how many men - Buddhist or not - who are so concerned about their tax dollars and "Human life" will offer to raise an unwanted child in order to prevent an abortion?

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

The reality is that would just cause a second wave (and potentially a third, fourth, etc.). "Young people" also have underlying conditions in many cases, and even those who aren't strongly effected just become carriers. It is not a viable option at all. It would also lead to greater economic disast...

I have had a long hard think overnight and l am going to extend my self isolation to things online in order to concentrate on practice. Wishing you all well, and may all beings find peace. Re: Getting Started with Tibetan Buddhism (Remotely?)

Seconding PeterC's suggestions, all are excellent. If you might be interested in a woman teacher, I highly recommend Khandro Rinpoche. She's fully grounded in genuine dharma, extremely well-educated, her teaching style is very clear and concise. I must say I owe you a big thank you for this topic, a...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

Handwashing is the most important thing you can do. Make sure you use correct technique, and dry thoroughly.

Another guideline is to try to keep your hands away from your face.
