Re: extibetanbuddhist dot com

Oddly enough the absolute best defense against PRS is a mix of being closed minded and in an unshakable routine. That sounds like a pretty good defense against authentic Buddhism too. Quite true. The reason for that is that transitional life phases are also how people move from a pre-existing belie...

Re: The Culture of Shut Up.

In the current culture, people are being pulled towards various kinds of extremes. But then, I guess life seems simpler to those who think in black and white, and we're living in a period of completely unprecedented change. There's an apparent safety in certainty. I would say that life is a lot sim...

Re: extibetanbuddhist dot com

I think that's actually quite fair. That is not victim blaming, it is just true..typically the people most attracted to those kinds of setups IME are the same people who lack the skills to know when they are being taken advantage of, which of course makes them the prime demographic for recruitment....

Re: Doubt, Vajrasattva, etc.

There are a few glaring issues that I think perhaps are causing you problems: 3) You do not seem to have full confidence in your teacher, and by extension lack confidence in his teachings. This is a fundamentally fatal flaw for Vajrayana practice. All of these things need to be worked out directly ...

Re: extibetanbuddhist dot com

so you're saying Tibetan Buddhism is a "hostile new religion"? or maybe its more like french fries? So I have to go here. Right then. I'm not saying that Tibetan Buddhism is a predatory religious sect. What I am saying is that Tibetan Buddhism is a VERY large category and within that category there...

Re: extibetanbuddhist dot com

doesnt the Tibetan tradition itself say that one should examine a teacher for a long time, even years, before trusting them? Does it sound like thats what she did? Who should be blamed for that immature behavior? The Dalai Lama? and shes supposed to be a mental health professional fer crissakes! Ex...

Re: Doubt, Vajrasattva, etc.

You've come to the right place. This is a Mahayana & Vajrayana website. That idea that enlightenment is simply cessation is an old-school idea. Plus you are doing Vajrayana practice, so you've bought into an anachronistic idea. The Vajrayana accepts the idea that you have a Buddha Nature that does ...

Re: Doubt, Vajrasattva, etc.

Tell me more about that. What answer in the book doesn't jibe with your calculations? Sure thing. In a nutshell one of the few things that all schools of Buddhism without exception agree on is that Enlightenment is a good thing. Everyone from the most unconventional Nyingma to the most ardent Thera...

Re: Doubt, Vajrasattva, etc.

Thank you very much for all of the replies. First, I e-mailed my teacher about 10 seconds ago. I will continue to practice until I hear from him. Second, there was something that I didn't add that I should. The situation I am in can be compared to when you are doing the type of math homework where y...

Re: Doubt, Vajrasattva, etc.

So wow. It has been awhile. I'm sorry I haven't updated this in such a long time. Samsara has been good and bad. I am still doing my Ngondro, still doing Vajrasattva, and it still is pretty painful, though I am now over a third of the way through. I may post this in another thread but in a nutshell ...

Doubt, Vajrasattva, etc.

First of all, apologies for the title. I've spent awhile trying to figure out what to type here and that was the best I could figure out. For those that aren't up to speed. I've been a Buddhist for about 10 years. About 4 years ago or so I found a teacher in the Dudjom Tersar lineage and started pra...

Re: Impoverished Western Practitioners

There is also the expense of attending courses and talks etc and we need to see ensure that Buddhism doesn't become (even more) white and middleclass. So supporting free tickets for events is also a good thing to do. And also perhaps simply refusing to support events that are just too pricey. Many ...

To everyone who posted(two people in particular, you know who you are), thank you very much for your help. I'm currently thinking about the responses very seriously. One thing, though I can answer pretty quickly. Lastly, I'm not sure I understand what you mean about "the path involving going insane ...

Re: Ngondro Challenges

Challenge, how do you feel about your teacher? Good question. The thing is my teacher is, due to the size and geography of the sangha, pretty distant. My relationship with my teacher/sangha is that I send them what I think of as a small amount of money a month, I try to make it to weekly Ngondro pr...

Re: Ngondro Challenges

I think that my experience and yours are different. I can't believe that no one has "challenges" with Ngondro. Unless someone can correct me here, this is a given. A lineage Guru says that I am to do Ngondro. I do Ngondro. See, this is where I can't help but envy you. Because of Ngondro I'm only 50%...

Precisely Challenge23. Dentistry cannot in itself lead to Enlightenment. But although at at advanced level in might be possible to dwell in the natural state while having toothache, most of us will be aided in our efforts to dwell in the natural state if we are free from toothache, at least initial...

As such I made this comparison in order to dissuade him from thinking that psychology might have the answers he seeks, as well as to say that based on my own experience Buddhism is a science and not a bunch of made up stories about Enlightened beings that can't actually exist. That aside, Psycholog...

Although it's impossible to define nirvana conceptually, That is exactly what makes me extremely nervous when we talk about nirvana. Either the inability for an individual to conceptually understand something or the inability for something to be understood conceptually is one of the primary tactics...

Re: Death at Tibetan Buddhist meditation retreat in Arizona

Geshe Michael's teachings built on that. Don't be afraid of being taken advantage of, because that's impossible. Nobody can ever take advantage of you. Don't tell small lies to avoid a truth that you think will have unpleasant consequences when it is revealed, because the small lies _cannot_ preven...
