Re: Bhaisajyaguru and Liberation.

The Medicine Buddha is wonderful. One of my first practices was quietly saying his mantra to cats while I cleaned their cages at an animal shelter. I feel this Buddha helps me treat animals and insects with more gentleness and patience, as well as giving me an appreciation for mantras in general. :t...

Re: Why is Buddhism so elitist and cliquey?

Regarding triumphalism, I see it as an upward comparison. If someone has affinity with that teaching, their confidence can be bolstered in difficult times through praises and hymns. If someone uses the teachings as a way to disparage others, then as narwhal said, the point of the Mahayana is being m...

Re: Issues with ending a friendship

Hi, JD. I'm sorry to hear about this. Malcolm's advice is basically what I had to do in a similar situation. There's a point where two people stop having a mind of goodwill towards each other. In my case, I grew permissive of irritation and a lack of affection for this person, and we started to mist...

I agree with PadmaVonSamba.
It's possible to introduce animal beings to the Dharma.

Re: Responding to insults

It also occurs to me that my first response to an insult is usually anger.
But anger can be worked with.
I included some resources for anger in this post... also a good thread in general.

Re: Dharma Transmission

Let me rephrase the question since the default answer on this forum is often "use the search function" or "Google it." How did you come to the school of Buddhism you now profess and how did you find your teacher? The Buddha's famous quote in the Dhammapada is a good, easy to remember guideline: To ...

Re: Does Buddhism Require You To Be a Liberal?

From the reading I've done and the few practicing Buddhists I know, I would gather that Buddhism leans to the right socially/politically, but online I see a lot 'hate' toward conservative points of view. Does Buddhism require you to be a liberal? Thanks Hello, Blackthorne. In Mahayana Buddhism, the...

Re: How does it work?

Hello, Blackthorne. There are verses and sutras for various purposes, like taking refuge in the Three Jewels, overcoming afflictions, developing virtues, cultivating faith and devotion for the Buddha, and so on. There are also verses of praise for the buddhas and bodhisattvas. Prayers have a benefic...

Master Shantao on Practice in Daily Life

I posted this over in r/PureLand, but felt this information would be useful here. In Honen Shonin's Senchakushu , he quotes a passage from Master Shantao concerning the Four Modes of Practice. One of these practices is that of "veneration." In it is good advice for daily life, as well as activities ...

Re: butsudans, I got mine at Nakayama Butsudans. They have a range of makes/prices and ship internationally. I have a small walnut butsudan big enough for an Amida Buddha statue. It has a light in the top and a shelf that pulls out for offerings, as well as a small underneath for supplies or a wagesa.

Re: Working with anger

Anger is a special concern for me, too. For abiding anger against others, Shantideva's chapter 6 on patience in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life can correct a faulty view of others. It's also the first time I saw patience described as an antidote to anger. I've found this approach makes mo...
