Re: Major Translations Forthcoming

Thanks Will. (I also just received this notification.)

This is really amazing, an incredible contribution to the Mahayana Dharma in the English language.

Re: Looking for Sanskrit help with words and concept

The *Vijnaptimatrasiddhi explains it as "二障種子立麁重名", ie. "the term 'coarseness' is established on the seeds of the two obstructions", ie. obstructions which are afflictions, and obstructions to the knowable. "hān" is to abandon. Abandonment of the two types of coarseness. ~~~ Non-thought, non-apprehe...

Re: Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

Introduction of the Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism at the University of the West Yes, I was there, and did indeed raise some of my questions. The response didn't leave me particularly satisfied. They said that they really don't do any living teachers, but actually there are a couple in there. Als...

Re: Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism

By the way, isn't the Fo Guang Shan Dicitionary in the process of being translated into English? Do you mean the Fo Guang Buddhist Dictionary? If so, then no, not at this point at least. Though we are translating a 22 volume Illustrated Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts, coming out this year 2014. ~~ H...

Re: Meeting Taiwan's new-age Buddhists

Ven. Indrajala, When you participated in the Humanistic Buddhism Monastic Life Program at Fo Guang Shan back in 2010, which included a 7 day Chan retreat in a 21 day program, you don't think that was enough emphasis on meditation? How much emphasis would you think appropriate? Half the time? Full ti...

Re: Meeting Taiwan's new-age Buddhists

Taixu's "buddhism for human life", the precursor to "humanistic buddhism" was started during times of war, both foreign invasion and internal civil war. And much of the start of "humanistic buddhism" started and continued under the cross channel cold (sometimes hot) war. And it was strongly supporte...

Re: Know Mind. Cultivate Mind: Buddhist Psychology

Hehe, thanks for that -- though I'm not going to watch it! haha!

I didn't know that they'd put it up on Youtube already.
This was at Hsi Lai Temple, Los Angeles, the Sunday before last.
This particular topic is something I've already done several times before, though.

As mentioned earlier, I think that with these categories you are comparing apples and oranges.

Re: 2014 Fo Guang Buddhist Monastic Retreat

Here's a review of the program from 2010 by a good friend of mine, Justin W, in his Patheos blog, <American Buddhist Perspective> (a Montanan studying Buddhist studies in the U.K.). This is a great blog for a range of Buddhist related stuff, by the way. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/americanbuddhist/...

Good question. The main reason is that different age groups have different needs.

By going to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha for refuge, and preferably taking the five precepts.

Pretty much the same way that one becomes any kind of Buddhist, that is, by going to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha for refuge, and taking the five precepts.

Or in terms of particular practices? Though, either way, even in the same monastery people may have different...
