Re: What place does pilgrimage have in Buddhist practice?

If you can afford it, I highly recommend it. It should be on every Buddhist's bucket list (that can afford it). I went in 2006 and loved it. It's kind of expensive for Americans since it's literally like going to the exact opposite side of the globe. I found a direct flight from Los Angeles to Londo...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Then during my anti-Nazi days I chased a couple of Nazis down a suburban street armed with a rifle. I would have shot them if I had found them. :o I'm glad you didn't catch them. It's interesting to hear the different upbringing stories of members here and it shows just how much it is ingrained in ...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

just a note here..in Canada you can apply for a gun license for hunting or for shooting holes in paper targets. BUT!!! if you say in the interview you need one for protection...finished! ..not a chance of receiving the license .. the words protection if used in any way ends any chance of getting th...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

It took less than a decade for the majority of Americans to change their minds from opposing marriage equality for same-sex couples, to supporting it. Does this mean all Americans are in favor of marriage equality? No, but it did signal a fast and dramatic shift after many decades of struggle and a...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

He opens the back doors and I can hear the sound of a muffled voice, a struggling sound, then he fires four shots into the back of the SUV. Then calmly shuts the back doors, hops back in the drivers seat and drives off. I hid, panicking, thinking he may see me and realize I witnessed him murder som...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

A solution is what works, gun bans are only a soothing ideal. Unfortunately, correct. In fact there was another proposed assault weapons ban (after the Clinton one I posted about earlier) in 2013 during the Obama administration. The vote failed, partly because 15 Democrat Senators voted against the...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

Did this ban apply to weapons like the AR 15? I recall that it did not. How would a ban on this sort of weapon even work, now that they are everywhere? Yes, it included the AR-15. However, overall it was still a pretty weak law in that it had: The Act included a "grandfather clause" that allowed fo...

Re: deadliest mass shooting in the U.S.

There was an assault weapons ban in the U.S. back in 1994 under Bill Clinton. It expired in 2004 and was not renewed. But it could be renewed, if the Dems can win both houses of Congress and the White House; which is very possible in 2020.

He suffered from cirrhosis of the liver for a long time. In 2009 he was in hospital for nearly three months. On 25 September 2017 he was admitted to a hospital due to the liver failure[15] On 6 October a liver transplantation was made when a liver donor was found. On 11 November he had surgery due ...

Pocket Hercules (1967-2017)

I just found out that the Pocket Hercules (Naim Süleymanoğlu) passed away 3 months ago at age 50. I know we have some weightlifters here and have had some previous threads on weightlifting, so thought I'd post this. Some of his many accomplishments in weightlifting: *3 Olympic Gold medals *7 World C...

Re: Buddhist Monks on the Las Vegas Strip

I live in Vegas, but not sure if those monks were real or not. I know some come here to give talks or for some programs and then while here some want to see what all the excitement is at the Strip (Las Vegas Blvd). I have heard that some have been seen gambling on the slots. I know in Asia there hav...

Re: I wish to become a Doctor (MD)!

So the average age of a new General Practitioner or Senior Registrar would be very similar to their American counterpart..late 20's early thirties. The average age for a new hospital Consultant would be early forties. Interesting, thanks for that info. from a buddhist pov. the practice needs to pri...

Re: I wish to become a Doctor (MD)!

An M.D. is the basic qualification needed to practice medicine. In most countries including the UK it takes 5 or 6 years to gain an M.D. qualification. In the U.S. it takes 4 years for the bachelor's then 4 years for the M.D. plus at least 5 years of residency; so about 13 years beyond high school ...
