Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

We should have had a big advantage in that we have no land borders That has been lost through Government indecision. Flights have been arriving from Covid19 hotspots and instead os isolation, or at least strong recommendations of self isolation, people have been travelling on or to home. Many of the...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

I’m settling in for either death or a retreat type situation. I would prefer the latter on the whole.

Re: Predictions of Stephen Hawking

Clearly you know little of Hawkins and his personality. You are also failing to distinguish between the “inevitability” of advanced life forms finding us ‘should they exist’ , and his being persuaded by mathematical probability that they might. His thinking on this and a range of other issues is nua...

Re: How many hours of meditation do Monks do per day?

How many hours of meditation do Monks do per day? Which hours during the day and night do they usually meditate? Depends very much on which monk. There are monks who snooze, eat, smoke a few fags, snooze again. Chant for a while because it’s expected. Plot, gossip, and have another little snooze. T...

The frequency with which “Yes Minister” looks like a documentary rather than a comedy is amazing.

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

Heaven only knows what the British governments response is. It appears to be only slightly less laissez -faire than that of the USA’s. As of yesterday travellers returning from Italy were being given official advice that they do not need to self isolate.. This morning this was admitted to be...

Re: My own hypocrisy, projections, expectations, and the fault in it all

The meditation on death helps with this kind of stuff. Once you’re dead none of those issues will matter one way or another. And, once you’re dead, your practice will still be relevant. It’s the simplest and easiest way to make a clean sweep. But because it reminds people of Christianity almost nob...

Re: How do Buddhists get rid of ants and other pests and insects?

Don’t kill spiders as ...Johnny says. They will, help keep the flies down. When we lived in a rural part of the U.K. ants would appear in the Spring and drop in regularly until Autumn. Ants are not disease vectors, they are very clean creatures. So we would live with them. I should add that we in the...

Re: Predictions of Stephen Hawking

Hawking was NOT a “firm believer in extraterrestrial life”. What he said was the idea that any alien life was likely to be kindly disposed to humanity was a fantasy. He said that IF there was contact with alien life it would be more like what befell the Native Americans when they had contact with Eu...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

There are certainly organisms that migrate and “hide”. The various varicella viruses are known to do this.
But at the moment most of the data is coming from the Chinese experience and there is not enough of it to reach more than tentative conclusions.

Sounds to me like you are just where you should be. In my experience (and I am not being facetious) we still remain confused, but we are confused at a higher level.

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

The World Honoured One called out bullshit every time he encountered it. BECAUSE he was moved by compassion.
I suggest that you start simply by googling the word “verbiage”. Then read back on your posts. And cringe.

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

You frequently use the word verbiage. I suspect that you do not know what that word means, and that it is frequently pejorative. But please continue to ventilate your own subjective interpretation of a Sutra which means nothing to the vast majority of Buddhists in a subforum for the general mainstre...

Two notes of caution .
1) This is all at the moment speculative.
2). This report is being interpreted and reported through the Daily Express which is the U K equivalent of Fox News ..treat accordingly.
