Re: Dharma and long-term economic recession.

No worries, PC. I think there are various degrees of seriousness in this thread. But I think this kind of sets the tone... :spy: :alien: :spy: / :sage: :buddha1: :sage: Its a "what if a zombie apocalypse wiped out 99% of mankind... what then?" kind of discussion, except its premised on Peak Oil and ...

Re: Nichiren Shu vs Jodo Shinshu

There is no misrepresentation. The object of devotion for observing the mind) (note Ven Nichirens words are offensive to many,I qoute them so you can get an idea of what he thought of people who follow Buddhist sutras other than the Lotus sutra) "All the teachings other than the one chapter and two...

Re: Dharma and long-term economic recession.

I've been perusing the blogosphere and have come across an interesting prediction that I feel holds some weight - at least for my part of the country: One of my best friends is a half grown Honduran dude. When I saw Apocalypto, I joked that it was like they had cloned him to populate the cast. Howe...

Re: advice on giving up smoking

I smoked for 18 years (EDIT: I just redid the math. It was 23 freaking years. Oy va voy. More years smoking than not.), more or less. There were a few spells, a few months to a year, when I "quit". I've now been "quit" for a year. This "quit" feels permanent. It feels different than the o...

Re: Nichiren Shu vs Jodo Shinshu

I am reluctant to post in this thread, but there are misrepresentations of Nichiren's teachings that I would like to address. I disagreed with Ven Nichirens views concerning abandoning all other sutras accept the Lotus sutra. For (1)the Lotus sutra states the sutras before it are provisional,it does...

Re: Dharma and long-term economic recession.

Not if you're a charmer . OK, humoring... All you need is Sandaihiho - Three Great Hidden Dharmas - 1. Gohonzon (Object of Veneration/Devotion), 2. Daimoku (August Title of the Sutra), and 3. Kaidan (Precept Platform). Depending on your interpretation of Nichiren, this can mean different...

Re: Dharma and long-term economic recession.

Follow up... That was kind of opaque. I have to wonder whether my branch of the Buddhist community (or even the larger Buddhist community) has any long term plan for how they will go about saturating Buddhadharma into Western culture if the oil, money and lattes start to run thin and then to a halt....

Re: How does karma decide whats good and whats bad?

Mr. Bambocha, In a way you could look at karma as neutral, in and of itself. The question of good and bad is determined by the effects - as Huseng wrote, "Good deeds lead to ease and bad deeds lead to suffering." The question gets complicated because we tend to mis-perceive the conditions and circum...

Re: Saichō's Monastic Reforms

Hi Huseng, If humanity returns to some dark ages, that will be truly unfortunate. I don't think that is by any means certain, but at the same time I couldn't really argue against your points. To me, spreading Dharma would be a significant factor in whether we can avoid such a dark future - and I don...

Re: Saichō's Monastic Reforms

Wow. Just spent an hour reading this thread. I suppose much of the discussion has faded off. Huseng - I don't know if its just Japanese Buddhism that is in permanent decline. I am just not sure any tradition is going to continue to maintain large rolls of renunciates. If economic development continu...

Re: Went to a Rissho Kosei Kai service today.

I'm a bit of a literal reader, possibly a weakness due to being a programmer. I'm not so good when things become symbolic - even Buddhist imagery gives me headaches. From a literal reading, the things described Lotus sutra can require a huge leap of faith. My ability to read into the symbolism is a...

Sorry I am not a very social person so maybe my communication is not very good. I also tend to write here after I fell out of bed, that might also add to the confusion  No worries - we're just "talking" :) I have never heard of this type of razor before. Re: How to get rid of clinging to self

How exactly is the concept of I an illusion?I can understand that there is no self set in stone but there is still technically a being called Red Faced Buddha. My major problem is my fear of impermanence and anatman. Well, what is a being then? What is YOUR being? Follow the question to its most abs...

Joda, I actually don't think anything you are opining is off topic. In many respects, you are standing in as a surrogate for the type of person the OP was looking for help in having a discussion/debate with. I'm observing that you make a number of arguments, but tend to conflate them, such that the ...

Re: when asked for ... "evidence" ... ideas, please ?

Yea I thought that much, since you implied you see Buddha as a form of metaphysical entity. I dont think I've read the Lotus sutra myself tho; when I dont mix it up its like the Avatamsaka rather filled with gummybears falling from the sky and rainbows shooting out of peoples ears - I prefered text...
