Re: Question on the Amitabha mantra

In this writing on the Amitabha mantra by Bodhipaksa he states the following: "Amitabha’s mantra is a variant of his name. Amideva is just the Tibetan pronunciation of Amitabha (although I was told for a long time that “deva” here meant “god”)." Source: https://www.wildmind.org/mantras/figures/amit...

Re: New to the idea, currently in a state of flux

Pls be aware that Buddhism should not be mistaken as a religion. It is an approach to see things differently. Nonsense, Buddhism is clearly a religion. It's a unique and very different religion than others, especially monotheistic religions, but it is a religion. I'd agree with this, it is and ther...

Is true, it is unfortunate for Korea that he departs. I wonder where he will go and if he plans to remain ordained.

Re: Hyongak Sunim fed up with Korean Seon

I think that you'll find that the problem with all institutions including religion is people, more accurately, greedy people that are more interested in power and prestige than practicing their religion and upholding the spirit of the ideology. There's been many threads on here about different teac...

Re: What would Buddha have thought of Mahayana?

Very often people who question the validity of the Mahayana sutras instead uphold the supremacy of the Pali Canon while paradoxically rejecting rebirth/karma. The "Why Secular Buddhism Is Not True" thread is fresh on my mind, so that's where my response came from. Sorry for the tangent! One...

Re: Counting mantras

If you have a daily goal of mantra recitations, how do you keep track of them? Especially when there are many little interruptions in recitation just during the course of an ordinary day. I have a two-ring nenju, but find it's difficult to use on work days. I tried a manual counter (push a button a...

Not in Mahayana, Human and Pure Land are the best alternatives.

Re: original buddhism

From what I've gathered, it sounds like contemporary Buddhism is rather schismatic, in terms of vehicles, cultural and language barriers, expectations of loyalty to lineage-specific teachers, etc. There's less emphasis on control over oneself then there is this drive for one to control the believer...

I was wondering whether this Tibetan Pure Land mantra was used in the same way as the Nembutsu in the Japanese schools - ie. the sole vehicle to carry one to Sukhavati. Or whether it was seen as an aid, or a supplement to other meditative practices? Can I recite only the Tibetan mantra and still re...
