Re: Quack!

I only use it on the forum and when other practitioners ask me what it is. I did an exploring monastic life program in Taiwan and they gave me a different Dharma name which I used for the duration there. I know some Taiwanese people who use their Dharma name all the time, but I'd just seem weird if ...

Re: Tsok restrictions

I should probably make it clear that I never, and would not, attempt to do any of the chod on my own. And as I've said, it hardly seemed like a practice and rather like a lesson in chanting.

Also, any advice on how to diplomatically handle the situation?

Re: How can I be a secular philosopher and a dedicated Buddh

Dawkins is hardly a philosopher, neither a theologian. He seems to be an intelligent biologist and should probably stick to that rather than rant on about things he fails to understand.

Tsok restrictions

I've been going to a small practice group a little bit in the nyingma pema lingpa lineage led by a Bhutanese loppon. I've received no empowerments or initiations or anything from anyone, I'm certainly in the sutrayana area of practice. Thing is the last time after the teaching on the four noble trut...

Re: Anti-Tibetan Buddhism Signs

I've spent some time in Chinese Mahayana communities and among the last devotees there seemed to be a great deal of misunderstanding about the Vajrayana and the monastics practicing it. I can totally relate to this from personal experience, ranging from open disgust and subtle dismissive attitudes ...

Then they should work on developing faith if they have any interest in Buddhadharma. If they just want meditation and moral guidelines, fine, but that's not Buddhadharma. Also, that is really not the way the question has been answered. Please read the Four Seals, they are very specific in setting o...

Re: Anti-Tibetan Buddhism Signs

i went to a Chinese food restaurant here and was talking to the owner and he asked me why i would ever want to be a monk in the Tibetan tradition. He said the lamas would force you to have %#%* sex. Now I see where he got that from. EDIT My mother-in-law is Japanese so nothing new. Same ol human co...

Re: Buddhist MEME. My Favorite

Wrathful deities are wrathful out of their compassion for stubborn sentient beings who are addicted to samsara, much like a parent who yells at children who are playing in the road. Be that as it may. I am reluctant to hammer this point any more, but wrath has never been classified as a quality of ...

Or Thailand where tattoos are considered the mark of the gangster or the rankly superstitious (or worse, into majic), both reasons to get you kicked out Army or monkhood if you were Thai. If not, you will just look criminal, superstitious, or foolish if you don't run afoul of the blasphemy laws whi...

I can take harsh. I have to learn some how it seems.or i just learn to share or what NOT to share here lol! It will soon become clear who is in the "tough club" around here. They are a small minority and not worth being influenced by. I have found most regular posters on Dharma Wheel to be kind and...

I doubt the directory is the work of one monk, that seems rather impossible.

Please do not use the term "Hinayana" as it may cause offence. No Buddhist group uses it a self-description, and it is doubtful that any ever did so. "Theravada" is a far better term for non-Mahayana schools. :namaste: Kim Actually, some Tibetan groups do use the term for the foundational teachings...
