Re: Pure Land & Suicide

Yet some of those who dare claim to be Ippen's disciples engage in this delusional act of jumping to their deaths in the sea after his passing causing a misunderstanding of the Pure Land practice...luckily I haven't heard of it in recent times... I am not exactly 100% about this but didn't Chinese ...

Re: Doing zazen but drawn to Pure Land,

I've started reading 'Buddhism of Wisdom & Faith' by Thich Tien Tam and there seems to be a definite mutual appreciation society between Zen & Pure Land. Reading the same book, about half way through. If nembutsu was explained in that book as it has been on this thread, I may have been a bit more i...

Read Brian Victoria's "Zen at War".
Yes I read it, so what?
So now you see that personality cults exist in Japan, and in Zen lineages.

I think you should get the empowerment when you have the opportunity and you won't have to reinvent the wheel.

Re: Hsuan Hua on Homosexuality

The question is, how will Dharma teachers skillfully deal with this without ostracizing people. An example of good skillful means is Chogyal Namkhai Norbu who asks that people "do their best". He is not turning people away from the Dharma. Ven. Hua had many students, and was able to establish over ...

Re: Hsuan Hua on Homosexuality

Baloney. The Dharma has always been "conservative". Which period of "Dharma" are we talking about. Read the Cakrasamvara Tantra and tell me how "conservative" that is. We do not need teachers with 'skillful means' as much as students & disciples who will not toss aside as 'conservative' or 'cultura...

Re: Hsuan Hua on Homosexuality

Leaving aside the whole Chinese versus Tibet thing, it is the case that teachers all round are all more conservative on matters like this than we care to admit. Somebody asked one of my teachers a question about abortion and the answer he gave shocked pretty much most of the audience. I think the t...
