Re: Practices for recognition at the end of Guru Yoga book

Just a question about categorization/purpose of practices. There are these practices at the end of the Guru Yoga book such as "recognition through sensation" "recognition through clarity" etc. What are these practices for? Are they to be used as something like Rushens or Semdzins? How are they supp...

Re: Bon Dzogchen

I think the most important lineage is the short lineage of Samantabhadra to ones root Guru to the disciple. Even better if ones root guru is a siddha. Of course it's important to respect the masters of legend that came before, even so, since it's ones root guru who gives this transmission all the pa...

The cycle also includes a unique Troma togal guru yoga, that is practiced for six months in retreat.

It's still not that straightforward, IMO. Look at Sogyal Rinpoche's credentials... Vajrayana is a very powerful medicine; if used incorrectly, it's a very powerful poison...

Re: Finding Your Guru

Here's my question on this subject: When one finds a teacher they feel a connection to and have gone through the whole examining the teacher process and have confidence, how does one ask them to be your teacher? Maybe it's not necessary to ask them in a formal way to be your teacher, but is it help...

Re: Black & Buddhist in America - 2018

At Lamdre some Asians and Whites would say stuff like: "Hey, you look like Virupa" , or "Oh, you are like Mahakala, my protector" :P or as a Tibetan commented one day "Your hair is like Buddha" (I have locs in my hair). At first I wasn't sure to be offended, but obviously I took them as comp...

Mantra and Dzogchen

I was reflecting on a recent thread on visualization, and it reminded me of a few citations that I remembered here , in regards to the importance of mantra and Dzogchen. Mañjuśrīmitra writes: Furthermore, since the teacher has declared that awakening can be correctly grasped with a symbol, in that c...

Re: Finding Your Guru

Are there any other qualifications one might say are good to investigate? Please tell stories of how you met your guru! It's very important to connect with a teacher you trust. Also it's important the teacher has received the transmission in an authentic way, so that way you feel confidence in the ...

Re: Visualisations and Dzogchen

I agree that the 3 inner tantras are practiced together, even so, the upadesavarga tantras and vidyadharas such as Vimalamitra (and others) do assert Ati Yoga as an independent yana that doesn't rely on the two stages. Also I'm not trying to argue for or against any position just wanted to point th...

Re: Visualisations and Dzogchen

In many Nyingma lineages yidam practices are not merely a preliminary to Dzogchen. They may be an enhacement as well, and sometimes a non-optional one, too (to an extent, at least). Your presentation reifies the boundary between tantra and Dzogchen, something which in Nyingma is not really done (or...

Re: Dharmakaya / Primordial Buddha

I brought this up on the Shingon section, and it is their opinion that Vairocana is the Primordial Buddha, although a teacher at my temple refuted this saying Vairocana is a sambogha-kaya rather than dharma-kaya. Is this true within tibetan tradition? Can someone explain to me the difference betwee...

Re: Dharmakaya / Primordial Buddha

Depends on how you define "sentient being." You can narrowly refer to ordinary beings, or broadly include Buddhas in the English term. Sentient beings is a term used to designate the totality of living, conscious beings that constitute the object and audience of Buddhist teaching. Translating vario...
