Re: Chomsky on Lesser Evil Voting

I tried to read the article but have comprehension challenges with dense prose. Interesting thread in any case :emb: What he is saying is that in essence, there are real world consequences in elections. If one votes only as a form of self-expression, and totally ignore the real world consequences, ...

Re: Dhyana in Zen

Silent illumination is like a form of conjoined dhyana and vipashyana. I understand that Silent illumination and Shikantaza combine shamatha and vipashyana. What is the relationship between dhyana and shamatha? In most contexts dhyana and shamatha refer to the same goal - absorption or meditative s...

Re: Dhyana in Zen

The Ten Oxherding Pictures suggest a graduated approach in Zen. Is it possible that these have a correspondence with levels of Dhyana? The equivalent Nine Stages of Tranquility found in the in the Mahamudra tradition (depicting an elephant instead of an ox) definitely illustrate a graduation of med...

We already have such a text, it is called bsam gtan mig dgron by Nubchen Sangye Yeshe. Chinghui Jianying did a dissertation in 2010, titled "Being and knowing in wholeness Chinese Chan, Tibetan Dzogchen, and the logic of immediacy in contemplation" that references Nubchen's work. https://scholarshi...

Re: Using Astral Projection for Dharma Practice

Also couldn't I learn anything regarding the Dharma at a Pureland? As well as take refuge, Bodhisattva vows, and empowerment? . Nope. You would have problems to practice the bodhisattva path because there are no suffering beings or obnoxious deluded beings in a pure land. Actually where did you get...

Thanks. Actually I did sign up with IKN earlier, but found nothing relevant to the particular transmission given by HHST. It is still a very useful site in general.

Re: Mistranslating Gampopa?

I see it as: Grant your blessing so that my mind may turn towards the Dharma. Grant your blessing so that the Dharma leads me onto the Path. Grant your blessing so that the path may clarify confusion. Grant your blessing so that confusion may dawn as wisdom. Turning one's mind to the Dharma, one fee...

It was just pointed out to me that the analogy might be apt if one could be married by watching a recording of someone's else's wedding.
Wait, are you telling me that the fight for same-sex marriage was unnecessary all along?

Re: Bodhisattva Doctrine in Buddhist Sanskrit Literature

By Har Dayal and first published in 1932. I never read it and wonder if it is too dated to be of value now or has he any unusual insights that are little emphasized today? It is wonderful. Indeed a bit outdated, but a good scholarly work overall. Note that Har Dayal is/was a Hindu nationalist, so y...

The Vajramala is collection of template empowerments, so it is a full empowerment, but less elaborate than the two main traditions of Kalacakra (Rwa and Dro). So would this upcoming book be something that would help? http://www.amazon.com/The-Vajra-Rosary-Tantra-Vajramalatantra/dp/1935011189/ref=sr...

Vajramala is a tantra, it is also a collection of initiations by the Mahāsiddha Abhayakaragupta. Noted. Found this too. A dissertation that eventually became the book to be released August 2014.
