Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Jeepers... I don't disagree with that at all. I started discussing sex/gender in the dharma, not as a "self identity" issue within Buddhism, but to address specific abuses in the sangha. To name a few: women and LBGTQIA people being told they are inferior vessels for dharma practice; LBGTQIA people ...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

That is certainly what Johnny Dangerous, Ven. J Khedrup, SImon E and Jamyang Tashi have very explicitly said. Others more dramatically and privately off the forum. -U Yet, for some reason, certain types of self-identity really seem to push us off our rails. A Buddhist talks about being black or quee...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

The subtext of this is that since we're all going down on the Titanic (we're stuck in samsara), there's no sense rearranging the deck chairs (worrying about social justice issues). I disagree as showing kindness to others and attempting to alleviate their suffering, even if temporarily and superfici...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

I don't know, when people are threatening to "rape your faggot ass" off the forum, it certainly sets a tone. From what I can tell, I've been pegged as a political agitator for using the jargon of IP to debate certain points, and regardless of how much I try to redirect to the more fundamental issues...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

We identify with any number of things as Buddhists. Our vehicle, our lineage, our teacher, our monastery-- perhaps specific philosophical views or methods of practice. Sometimes we identity with non-sectarianism or with the "Buddhism without beliefs" of Stephen Batchelor. It's not something we even ...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Zhen Li... I'm not sure if you've intentionally or accidentally missed my poi t. But, to clarify, my reference to healing the sick and tending the wounded wasnt in reference to LBGTQIA people. It was in reference to the fact that on Buddhist circles it's acceptable to be political feeding people, he...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

It's interesting. It seems possible in sangha or in mixed sangha company to have a dialog about "engaged Buddhism". Generally after some discussion of the causes of suffering and liberation from suffering people generally agree that its good to, well, do good deeds. That is pretty consistent with th...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

I find it vexing when sangha responds to narratives of personal tragedy or struggle with: well, that's samsara... can't fix samsara . I can see it being a redirect from a teacher if one is wallowed in some self pity. But when one's interest is directed outwards to others, as a matter of engagement a...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

One of the lessons that we can take from the last century is that anyone and everyone is capable of inflicting extreme cruelty on each other. That is something reported by Jewish victims of the Shoah when facing their tormentors: they were seemingly normal people. People can have lunch with their sp...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

I started the Untxi stories with the tale of a gay male bashed by straight females in the sangha. Then I told a cluster of stories about women being abused by men. I was going to follow it up with the tale of my own abuse by a psychopathic mother, and how getting my mind around that dynamic really c...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

I never said anyone had a monopoly on abuse.

Christ. This was supposed to be about sharing personal experiences, and after sharing my experiences of women in my life being abused, and how I experienced that, I'm getting accused of that. Nice.

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Zhen Li... I suppose we are biased by our experiences. I have very few female friends and family who have not been victims of some form of violence at the hands of men. I came to feminist thought on my own , there were no such models in my family, to make sense of my own experience-- my own experien...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

No-- no misunderstanding. RAINN is great. I refer people to that resource often. Just emphasizing the contemplative aspect, to bring it back to the theme of the larger forum-- dharma practice. I'm familiar with the RAINN materials. I have peer counseled men who have committed gender violence for som...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Jamyang Tashi... I'm familiar with the RAINN materials. I have peer counseled men who have committed gender violence for some years. Thanks though. I prefer to approach it through meditation and mindfulness of one's impulses and their origins, especially their roots in one's environment and culture....

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Many good points here. The narratives I share really span a very broad spectrum of American influence. Some of my experiences are very much "small town" as Jamyang Tashi referred to. A friend of my was molested regularly by her stepfather for years. This was something that happened with impunity bec...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Untxi story... This isn't particularly about discrimination, but violence. Violence against women is something that has been ever-present in my life. My aunt was a victim of domestic violence until the death of her husband. She was raped on her honeymoon, and beaten so regularly that I never really ...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Rory... Your story resonates with me. I am in the Deep South, and virulent queer-phobia is the norm. A place where if you stand in front of the LBGT, Occult, or Eastern Religion sections at Borders-- you might get somebody walking up to save you. I've come to notice a variety of ways people encode t...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Zhen Li... My comments were not intended specifically as critique of your won viewpoint. What you said and how Zsc responded really made me think of all the different ways one might assert different types of identity. I mention "identity politics" as this was something of a theme in an earlier threa...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

There are some interesting points in this. There are a variety of reasons to identify with something-- or not. They are not all necessarily based in identity politics. It's problematic to assume that. For one, as I posted in an earlier thread, for people coming to terms with being inherently other i...

Re: Personal Experiences of Discrimination

Zhen Li... I have two objections to this analysis. One is philosophical coherence. If it's a matter of sexual identity re vinaya being a problem, then all sexual identities should be a problem. Orbital to this community was a women, who like Ven. Pema Chodron, became a nun after divorce and her chil...
