Re: How do I go deeper into Zen practice?

yes, wisdom is inherent. It needs no cultivation tho it may appear so. Wisdom, like all dharmas, arises naturally like boxes and lids.

As I hear it, the highest teaching in zen is.... "make a response".

The teaching is upside-down: to go deeper, make a response (ofc, this is not about will)

Re: Misfortune (Please Advise)

It seems as though I have been exclusively generating demerit in my practice which results in unpleasant circumstances manifesting for me. This isn't entirely unanticipated mind you. Nichiren says in one gosho that the daimoku has the effect of drawing negative karma to the surface to be dealt with...

Re: Upside Down Thinking

I was puzzling as to where to post this.... it is both related to what Barry said .... and just right for Zen for the Hollidays. Snowball I made myself a snowball As perfect as could be. I thought I'd keep it as a pet And let it sleep with me. I made it some pajamas And a pillow for its head. Then l...

Re: Upside Down Thinking

Hi folks, I am posting this here for the benefit of anyone who might be browsing these fora. Not really looking for a discussion, they just seemed like useful words. We have this idea and it’s part of our culture. This idea has been created in this culture. That is “if we practice properly we can g...

Re: The Six Lamps

This means i see no objections in reading "secret" Dzogchen text as preparation to the actual to follow upcoming related teachings. In that way Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche wrote Heart Drop of Dharmakaya, a very secret Dzogchen book. He knew that future students will come to ask him more about Dzog...

heartdrops fell off the shelf 25+ years ago, lucky life. have you ever talked to your root guru in person? just what does this all mean? forgive, I obviously don't understand. I can't comprehend how we can judge what we are ready for. Tashi delek L, Yes it was some time ago (22 years), since the pu...

Agree with Kim.... it goes without saying, it's step by step, relax. I'd say no.... careful with fruit, only organic peanut butter, if at all .... and no fruit juice.

Re: Giving Up Sugar and Junk Food

justsit has some good suggestions. Agree, more water. Plan ahead what to eat when you get hungry, esp at night. Adding good quality essential oils will help to curb hunger.... coconut oi., olive, nuts and seeds ,.. not canola or fish oil. I like to soak a handful of raw almonds overnight, they are s...

Re: simultaneity of cause and effect

ofc, I don't know the answer to that, but I can say it seems that Malcom has a lot to offer here in terms of comprensive knowledge... notice this in this dialog with Meido about zen too. I've noticed that Malcom is participating more than I remember several years ago when I was here last. my limited...

Re: Western Myth of Zen

well.... this is a sicky wicket. I would go so far as to say it (chanting, etc) is meditation.... and I'd go farther and say noticing and awareness is a good start to cooking, tea, prostrations, etc ... but it goes beyond ... to no movement in the mind. how do you know how to add the salt with no mo...

don't understand a word of what you said, but it does seem to relate. What I can say, I don't know how to map one on the other, not my purpose. I always perk up when I see the word relation... no fixity there. And whatever collective Godhood is, it sounds right in spirit. Forgive I don't know who th...

Re: Om Ma Tri Mu Ye Sa Le Du

This mantra has always stayed with me. For me, it's power is in the visualization: OM and MA in Yab yum with the 6 realms encircling and circling (moving) around them. As far as I know, it's one of three heart mantras in Bon. My good fortune was a daylong teaching on this mantra with a monk from Men...

good interview on BATGAP: :anjali: yes, I once heard Igor Kufayev teaching on Kashmiri Shaivism... it resonated for me. Igor went back to Europe where you may still find him. Thanks Linda, I'll have to check that out. A close friend of mine ...

then, what would you say about this.... if I have it right....

the living waters in christianity simply {make] something more of what they already are.

for me, deep compassion in that. tho, {make} is an odd word there

and, the trinity vis a vis the kayas....?

not what one hears in church

Re: Recently, a family member told me that "without God, we are nothing".

Very good discussion on this page folks.... note The Gospel of Thomas.... you won't find it in too many, if any, bibles. There's a nice thread here if we don't get too hung up on the details. We don't really know much ... thus, my experience with Religion 101 on page one. Thomas goes beyond that, an...

Re: The Six Lamps

Thanks for the clarification Malcom. I was forgetting the point of the OP. In my limited experience with Tenzin Wangyal, It's the way he teaches and I've heard it from others. Tho, I am guilty of good book karma in the bookstore. I found Heartdrops of Dharmakaya before I knew what Buddhism was. It s...

Re: Recently, a family member told me that "without God, we are nothing".

I wondered what my Buddhist friends here might say to that line of thinking. :namaste:  From a Christian POV it's spot on: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was ho...
