Re: Recently, a family member told me that "without God, we are nothing".

Well, not nothing. Just no-self. that is what is meant in the Christian tradition when they say .... you must enter the kingdom as children. I'm not well schooled in this.... maybe Christ said this, I dunno. It's in the bible.... I flunked Religion 101 in college, had to repeat it as a mand...

Re: The Six Lamps

heartdrops fell off the shelf 25+ years ago, lucky life. have you ever talked to your root guru in person? just what does this all mean? forgive, I obviously don't understand. I can't comprehend how we can judge what we are ready for.

Re: The Six Lamps

FWIW, go for it Johnny. clearly, you love both. I'm a zennie, closet Tibetan, I saw Norbu once in 1999 before I knew much about Buddhism... no need, his presence spoke to me.... I drove like a maniac to get up to his retreat on the third day after work.... to connect with guru yoga essence.... at th...

Re: More bad news

This type of thing was active at ZFI for years, yes years... the most talked about topic on the forum. what does that say? The infamous letter signed by the 66 righteous ones ... lot of good it did. The very idea of a rule book with hundreds of pages.... an ethical statement is another more useful a...

As it was, he had to leave the retreat for 2 days bec he was flying back to AR to be sworn in as a US citizen....

to put it in a nut shell.... diet stories are similar to other stories we tell. ofc, stories have nothing to do with actually eating food

Re: Chan practioner thinking about visiting a nyingma center

I'll second Kim.... "excellent attitude" .... and confirm... I have years on zen and chan yet appreciate nyingma/vajrayana/bon centers. I don't mind the devotional thing either.... I make no comparisons. Someone mentioned Chagdud... I'd like to read his book. Yrs ago I was at a Red Tara retreat/fest...

Re: What is this?

on the subject of what is this .... hi-jacked this from facebook tho it's not about oranges. In the early 1970s, two Buddhist masters met in Cambridge, Massachusetts. One of them, Kalu Rinpoche, was a renowned Tibetan meditation master who had spent many years in solitary retreat in the remote mount...

lol .... this mind does not belong to me/myself and I or you/yourself and us. Even Dogen says... even grasses, trees....

I know less about Dogen than Hakuin... but love Dogen... he says it above.... no need to know more

Re: By way of welcome: Let's drink some tea!

well, this must be a scene from the movie, Being There  you're too late! My props are starting to dissolve... and I"m forgetting those ummon koans which I could recite so faithfully. The essence of the rice cake story is about drinking tea or the pages from Amazon about the tea.... just as y...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

DGA, don't know if I can "set you straight"... all I can try to do is tell you what I see. I hope I can articulate this.... first point, really the only point, since everything follows this. In zen, ordinary mind is not associated with what we would call ordinary in this so-called samsaric everyday ...
